New In Town Bears Loving Free Agent Acquisition Peppers

Julius Peppers is a little like the Miami Heat's Libran James. In fact, the five-time Pro Bowl defensive end played a little basketball himself, reaching the Final Four with the Tar Heels in 2000.
And like James, Peppers has found the right free cheap nfl jerseys
agency situation to extract him from his home state, the only place he's ever played. Discontented with the Panthers for the past couple seasons, the five-time Pro Bowl defensive end had the opportunity in March to test the market after the Panthers declined to place their franchise tag on him this year.
Peppers was born in Bailey, N.C. and played three seasons in Chapel Hill before being drafted second overall in 2002 by the Panthers. For Peppers, however, the move has been seamless.
"I'm feeling great," Peppers said during a Wednesday conference call. "I feel like everything is going good thus far, so the transition has been pretty easy."
Peppers made a major splash in his debut with the Bears; separating Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford's shoulder during a sack which also forced a fumble.
"It went good," Peppers said of his first game with Chicago. "The other thing I could have done a little better is helping the run game and a little bit more pressure."
The Bears expect Peppers to maintain that performance level after signing him to a six-year deal worth $91.5 million, with $42 million guaranteed over the first three years. Peppers said he feels pressure, but not from contract expectations.
"It's really the pressure from the coaches and my teammates," he said. "They are counting on me to make plays out there, so I'm not thinking about the contract."
Bears head coach Love Smith said the team has welcomed Peppers not only for his supreme skills, but also for the example he has set as a veteran.
"He's just been a real pro with everything we've asked him to do," Smith said. "He had a lot going right away, getting the respect of his teammates and being selected team captain. He comes to work every day and is very coach able.
"You want all of your players like that coming in to work every day."
Despite hitting 30 years of age in January, Peppers shows no signs of San Diego Chargers jersey
slowing down. He has registered double-digit sacks in five of the past six seasons and recovered a career high 11 fumbles last year.
Peppers remains versatile in that he can attack the offense from either the left or right side, and he was even open to the idea of becoming a 3-4 outside linebacker while still a free agent. The Bears, however, are happy to continue using him as a defensive end from either side. Even though he played the majority of snaps last week on the right, Peppers said he does not have a preference of which end to rush from and, in fact, played his first six seasons in the league exclusively as a left end.
"I've been getting a little more reps on the right side," he said, "but I think as we get more into the season it will be equal time on both sides."
Smith said they will deploy Peppers from a specific side on a week-to-week basis.
"He's comfortable playing on either side," Smith, the Bears head coach since 2004, said. "We'll look at the matches a little bit and have a different game plan each week."
Some of those matches this week could be against tackles Doug Free, Marc Colombo and Alex Barron. Peppers said he has watched film on all three and described them as solid players.
Chicago is already familiar with Colombo, who they used with their first-round pick in 2002. He played for the Bears through 2005 before joining the Cowboys.
"We know Marc fairly well," Smith said. "He's a tough player - just a scrapper. Chicago Bears jersey
Every down you know what you're going to get from him."
Peppers was held without a sack when he visited the Cowboys last year as a Panther, but the offensive line will still have difficulty Sunday stopping a player who is rejuvenated by a new uniform and new system.

Bears in Mind
Colombo Practicing, Aiming To Play Old Team

IRVING, Texas - Playing Sunday at Cowboys Stadium would be special for Marc Colombo.
Not just because he'd be rejoining his teammates after a nfl jerseys
four-game absence, counting preseason. Or because the Cowboys are trying to avoid their first 0-2 start since 2001.
It's the Chicago Bears.
Sunday's opponent is the team that drafted Colombo in the first round (29th overall) back in 2002. It's where he started his career. It's where he began to learn how to overcome professional adversity.
Colombo is practicing again and aiming to return Sunday from an Aug. 16 scope to clean out loose particles in his right knee, and Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips said "it looks good" for him and starting left guard Kyle Kosher to play this week.
Truth is, Colombo's been through much worse.
On Nov. 18, 2002 - his 10th career game and fifth career start - he suffered a dislocated patella and femoral nerve damage in his left knee against the St. Louis Rams.
"I had probably a five-percent chance of ever playing again," Colombo said.
Forced to spend the entire 2003 season and part of 2004 rehabbing his injury, he returned to play in eight games. But Chicago released him in Week 2 of the 2005 season, and the Cowboys signed him that November with a long-term view of continuing to get his knee and body back to form.
Working with strength/conditioning coach Joe Jurassic and the Cowboys' medical and athletic training staff, Colombo did just that. He won the right tackle job in 2006 and stabilized a fluid position, starting 57 straight games before fracturing his fibula and suffering a high ankle sprain last Nov. 15 against the New Orleans Saints jersey
Green Bay Packers.
The injury didn't stop him from returning in time for the Cowboys' two playoff games. The nagging particles in his knee aren't stopping him from returning as soon as Sunday either.
"There's nothing rehab-wise that's going to bother me now after that (2002 injury)," Colombo said. "That was a two-year rehab. Coach (Bill) Parcels took me in and gave me another chance. Joe Jurassic built me from the ground back up and got me to play at a first-round level again."
Colombo's right tackle position has been spotlighted this week for all the wrong reasons. His replacement, Alex Barron, committed three holding penalties in last Sunday's loss to the Washington Redskins, including one on the game's final play that nullified Roy Williams' tying touchdown catch.
As much as Colombo's experience with the rest of the Cowboys' starters, the line benefits from his leadership.
"He is our leader, I think, on our offensive line as far as meetings and practice and pushing everybody," Phillips said. "He's a leader. You miss him there. He's a good football player that's solid and consistent."
Said tight end Marcellus Bennett: "I don't have to worry about anything when Colombo gets to the line because he tells everybody what's going on. He's like a (Jason) Written playing tackle. He does bring a lot of leadership over there."
Kosher has similar traits. Phillips said their primary backups, Montréal Holland and Barron, will play some in relief simply because Kosher and Colombo haven't played a game in nearly five weeks. Steelers jersey

Colombo said Wednesday's practice - his first since the scope - helped him test the knee in live action. He has "every intention" of playing against his old team and believes the surgery will get him back to the level he played at early last season.
"What was in my knee was kind of keeping me from doing what I needed to do," Colombo said. "I didn't want to do anything because I was hurt last year. It's good to do what I did and I'm hoping that's going to get me playing at the level I'm used to playing at."
Sunday's challenge is Chicago's pair of defensive ends, Julius Peppers and Mark Anderson.
"They're really good," Colombo said. "We've played them a San Francisco 49ers jersey
few times. A lot of film work, a lot of practice.
"It's the Chicago Bears. That's always special. It was really cool to go up there and play in Chicago last time (in 2007). Them coming here, it's a really big game for me. It's where I began my NFL career. I'm excited about that."

San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary returns to his fiery ways on the sideline

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Mike Singletary spoke from a podium Tuesday, but he may as well have been talking from a therapist's couch. His most expansive answers came when asked about his emotional state and whether his fiery public persona runs the risk of burning out.
His analysis has a practical application: A week after dialing back his football jerseys
emotions in the Week 1 opener, Singletary was back to yelling at officials -- and others -- during a 25-22 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Monday night.
Singletary had vowed not to argue with referees this season. Consider the policy over. Just ask the officials who got an earful from Singletary after the coach charged onto the field trying to get a timeout called near the two-minute warning.
"After the first game, I had several players and coaches say, 'Coach is you OK? Are you all right? What's wrong? You're not yourself.'
"And during the game, I was biting my tongue. I was wrestling with myself not to say this, not to say that.
"But I realize my players and my coaches have grown to know me and to want me to be who I am.’Don't change on us. The person that you've been? We've grown to trust that person. Stay true to that.' "
Singletary's behavior became a topic last week after he came across as a man on the edge during a TV interview with KPIX. The coach acknowledged Tuesday that he has to be more thoughtful in his answers but added:
"One thing I've learned about this job: I have to be who I am. I'm not going to change. I'm not a politician. I'm not a tap dancer. I just have to do a better job of not letting the media bait me the way they did last week in one particular incident."
After a strong performance by the offensive line, Singletary said Vikings jersey
he will consider keeping center David Baas as his starter even when mainstay Eric Hetman returns from a broken fibula.
Aside from a botched snap for a safety on the 49ers' opening drive against the Saints, Baas has played well in Hetman’s absence. The 49ers averaged 5.5 yards per run Monday, and the Saints registered zero sacks against quarterback Alex Smith.
"He's done a good job. He's taken over ownership of that position and done well," Singletary said of Baas.
Hetman, who has three career Bob Citric Awards as the team's top lineman, is expected to return soon. Singletary said only that "we'll have to sit down and evaluate and talk about the chemistry."
Singletary said right guard Chile Rachel will retain his starting job whenever he has recovered from a stinger suffered in Week 1. Adam Snyder played well in Rachel’s absence Monday.
Singletary said that Smith's performance was the best of his career. The quarterback has had games with more yards (he threw for 275) and higher passer ratings (his 82.3 was hurt by two tipped passes for interceptions), but Smith showed a new level by orchestrating a terrific two-minute drill.
That drive was an eight-play, 82-yard beauty that consumed only 53 seconds -- all with the game on the line.
Overall, the 49ers offense had better tempo than it did during a Week 1 loss plagued by clock-management problems. Singletary acknowledged that the 49ers spent last week practicing with a 40-second clock rather than 45 seconds.
With 112 yards rushing against the Saints, Frank Gore broke Colts jersey
a tie for the franchise record. Gore has 21 career 100-yard rushing games, one better than Joe Perry.
The 49ers defense ranks fourth in the NFL after two weeks, allowing only 264.5 yards per game.

24 sep 10 Jones-Drew ready to ‘pop’ after 2 scoreless weeks

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew(notes) stirred up his fantasy football league Wednesday with talk he was ready to trade his best player.
He got some offers, even a couple of intriguing ones.
But Jones-Drew wasn’t quite ready to give up on his top draft pick.
“I’m not trading myself,” Jones-Drew said.
And neither should anyone else, Jones-Drew insisted. Jacksonville’s star nfl jerseys
player believes he’s on the verge of a breakout game, maybe even Sunday against Philadelphia (1-1).
“It should pop sooner or later, hopefully sooner for my sanity,” said Jones-Drew, who missed part of practice Wednesday with an ankle injury.
Jones-Drew has been mostly bottled up in Jacksonville’s first two games. He ran 12 times for 31 yards Sunday at San Diego, the eighth time in the last nine games that he’s been held under 100 yards.
He carried 23 times for 98 yards in the opener against Denver, but 34 of those came in the fourth quarter as the Broncos started showing signs of wilting in Florida’s heat and humidity. Before that late spurt, Jones-Drew averaged 3.8 yards a carry.
He averaged 2.6 yards a carry against the Chargers.
“Teams have been doing a lot of good things against us by stacking the box,” Jones-Drew said. “We’ve been close a couple of times, but we’re just going to keep working at it.”
Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter counted 11 consecutive plays in which San Diego put eight defenders near the line of scrimmage and had one of the them blitzing running plays.
How do the Jaguars (1-1) counter that?
“Defenses are going to be stacked until we make them hurt for being stacked,” coach Jack Del Rio said.
That’s where quarterback David Garrard(notes) comes in. Saints jersey
Garrard played one of his worst games against the Chargers, throwing four interceptions, getting sacked twice and missing two shots deep.
“You hit on a couple of those and they’ll loosen up a little bit,” Del Rio said. “Until you hit on some of those, they’ll be packed in there.”
In his first season as the starter, Jones-Drew ran for a career-high 1,391 yards and 15 touchdowns. He did it behind two rookie offensive tackles and a guard coming off reconstructive knee surgery.
Although some expected even more success in 2010, others questioned whether Jones-Drew’s 312 carries—plus his 53 receptions and all those shots he takes while blocking on other passing downs—would take a toll on his body.
It became even more of a topic when Jones-Drew missed the final two preseason games because of some soreness in his sometimes-balky left knee.
Jones-Drew has repeatedly insisted his knee is fine.
Maybe so, but he hasn’t scored a touchdown on the ground through two games and has only one rush longer than 10 yards.
“We need some explosiveness out of our backfield,” Del Rio said. “We’d like to get Maurice going. That’s definitely something we’d all benefit from.”
Jones-Drew and the Jaguars have been relatively slow starters on the ground.
Former Jaguars star Fred Taylor(notes) gained most of San Diego Chargers jersey
his 11,271 career yards after October, and none of Jones-Drew’s 12 100-yard rushing games came in the first two games of any season. Week 3 has been a different story, with Jones-Drew posting 100 games in three of his four previous years.
This could be his week.Indianapolis Colts jersey

“Obviously I’m upset about my performance, and a lot of guys are as well,” Jones-Drew said. “We kind of got a little bit out of whack as an offense in San Diego. Everybody is excited about coming back and starting over.”

Vick move a mistake by Eagles

Colts jersey
Andy Reid's decision to go with Michael Vick as starting quarterback is stunning.
It's also a mistake and out of character for an organization that usually nfl jerseys
doesn't make reactionary moves.
The Eagles' plan was to develop Kevin Kolb as Donovan McNabb's replacement and have Vick available as a backup and to run Wildcat plays. Unless Reid feels as though Kolb has serious concussion issues, the decision to make him the backup is further proof the Eagles should have waited a year to make a quarterback transition.
The Vick comeback is one of the best stories in football this season. But Reid and the Eagles decided to trade McNabb to Washington because they thought Kolb was the perfect rhythm quarterback to work out of three- and five-step drops in a West Coast attack. Vick isn't a rhythm quarterback. He's a wildcard who is at his best when he's scrambling and making plays.
The move sends mixed signals to the locker room. Vick is popular with teammates and players respect him. But where does this leave Kolb, who is effectively benched after playing less than one game this season? Kolb sat out Week 2 because of a concussion but was cleared to practice this week.
It's critical for the Eagles to roll off a winning streak in their next five games Dallas Cowboys jersey
against the Jaguars, Redskins, 49ers, Falcons and Titans because their second-half schedule is brutal. In the final nine games, the Eagles face the Colts, Redskins, Giants, Bears, Texans, Cowboys, Giants, Vikings and Cowboys. If Vick doesn't win, it's going to be tough to go back to a cold Kolb.
In Philadelphia, the quarterback controversy will be the hot topic all season. I contend this was a controversy that wasn't needed. They should have kept McNabb for 2010.
The Philadelphia Eagles have announced that Michael Vick is the club's starting quarterback a day after coach Andy Reid said the exact opposite. Reid will hold a news conference to discuss his flip-flop decision at 6:30 ET.
It's a stunning turn of events for an organization that decided to trade star quarterback Donovan McNabb to a division rival largely because of its faith in Kevin Kolb. Now they've given Kolb a contract extension and they have Vick in the final year of his contract.
I understand the argument that Vick gives the team the best chance to win in the Chargers jersey
short term, but think about what Reid's doing to Kolb. He'll probably say all the right things, but this has to be extremely frustrating for him. It looks like the Kolb era lasted two quarters.
I think Reid probably came to this decision because he doesn't trust that Kolb can function behind this offensive line. Or maybe he just doesn't have any faith in Kolb. I'm sure much of the fan base will applaud this decision, but I think Reid will end up with egg on his face.
I'll have much, much more after the news conference.

Andy Reid makes a knee-jerk decision

Colts jersey
So the Philadelphia Eagles just spent an offseason selling us Kevin Kolb as their starting quarterback only to pull the plug on him after two quarters and one concussion. At least one newspaper in town had already published a five-part series on the life and times of Kolb. Think of the time they could have nfl jersey
saved if they had known about Andy Reid's wandering eyes.
And what must Donovan McNabb be thinking in Washington? It now looks as if the Eagles wanted to replace him with any quarterback not named Donovan McNabb. For once, Reid has played to the team's rabid fan base. I've seen the Internet polls that overwhelmingly said Eagles fans wanted Michael Vick as the starter.
I guss his six quarters of action this season, which have been brilliant by the way, are enough to pretty much derail Kolb's future in the league. Reid, the man who seemed convinced that Kolb was a perfect fit for his West Coast offense just a month ago, now thinks Kolb could use more time on the sideline.
"I actually think this helps Kevin Kolb's maturation process," Reid said. "The future is bright for Kevin Kolb."
Yeah, as long as he can find a head coach he can trust in the near future. Kolb's too gracious to come out and rip Reid, but how he can he ever believe anything the man says at this point. There was all this talk about how the Eagles' young players would grow up around Kolb. Those statements meant nothing in the face of Vick's recent play.
It was funny to hear Reid talk about consulting general manager Howie Roseman on this decision, as if he was looking for company in case this moves fails. For the record, I agree that Vick probably gives the Eagles a better chance to win in the short term based on his experience and ability to run for his life.
But now the Eagles have painted themselves into a corner with two quarterbacks. Reid said it was a "beautiful thing" to have two quarterbacks this talented, but something tells me one of them doesn't see it that way. Vick is in the final year of a contract that pays him $5.2 million this season. They'll probably have to Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
offer him an extension soon -- especially if he continues to play well.
Kolb is scheduled to make $12.25 million guaranteed this season, which will serve as a nice consolation prize. I think he's a mentally tough kid, but I don't know how any quarterback overcomes this type of demotion. Reid has always made a big deal about starters not being able to lose their positions because of injury, but that's exactly what happened with Kolb.
His concussion opened the door for Vick, who was too much for Reid to resist. It was almost embarrassing to hear Reid pile on the hyperbole regarding the former Falcons quarterback, calling him an "ex-superstar who has regained his abilities."
But wait, there's more:
"Michael Vick is playing out of his mind right now," Reid said. "What a lucky franchise and a lucky head coach I am to have two quarterbacks that I feel that way about. It's unbelievable."
It certainly is unbelievable, but not in way Reid is describing. This is not a sound decision based on a lot of regular-season games. This is a coach overreacting to a player's performance in six quarters of action. Vick was sacked six times Sunday and there could have been more. This is what happens when you have a shaky offensive line anchored by an inexperienced center who reportedly missed several calls Sunday.
Reid doesn't want to admit this, but he's inserting Vick because he has a better chance of making plays behind a subpar offensive line than Kolb. Of course, Kolb was supposed to be a perfect fit for Reid's offense, which puts a premium on accuracy. That hasn't been one of Vick's strengths in the past, Minnesota Vikings jersey
but it's now vogue to say the post-prison Vick may be more effective than the guy who played for the Falcons.
Count me among the skeptics. I don't believe you throw an entire offseason plan in the trash based on two quarters. Reid would have us believe this is more about Vick's brilliance than Kolb's poor performance against the Packers.
In my mind, this is about the Eagles trying to take a shortcut to the playoffs. And I think it's a plan that will blow up in their faces.

Practice routine changed Sunday

Colts jersey
After playing a rare Friday night game the Jayhawks got to rest on Saturday. While Sunday’s are usually a light practice in terms of going physical this past Sunday was a new experience.
The team went over a few details on Saturday, but when they showed up for practice on Sunday they got a change of pace thrown their way.
“We came in Saturday and just lifted and watched film,” said wide receiver nfl throwback jerseys
Bradley McDougald. “On Sunday we had a tougher practice than we normally do. It wasn’t because we lost or anything but coach wanted to use that day to get better.”
The normal schedule calls for a lighter practice on Sunday in terms of how physical the play is. Then the team doesn’t practice on Monday and returns to the field on Tuesday. The practices on Tuesday are a day when the pads pop a little harder.
Defensive end Kevin Young said going with the pads on Sunday gave them extra work they needed to get in.
“Normal Sundays we just come out in helmets,” Young said. “This Colts jersey
past Sunday we came out in top shells like a normal week practice. It was a good practice so we can get the work in and took the opportunity to get better. I think that practice helped us to really get out there and go at it.”
One player that might not have felt the effects on the change on Sunday is Alonso Rojas. Being the punter he doesn’t take on the hitting the other players do but he liked the idea as well.
“Coach wants to prepare for us for a game situation and that’s the best way to possibly prepare to go out there and go 100 percent,” Rojas said. “I know some guys were nicked and bruised and I can’t relate to that because I don’t get hit as much, but it’s always good to get out and there and get your pads out.”
The players were told to get their pads on and the practice would not Cowboys jersey
go like normal Sunday routine. They were never told why there was a change but Rojas believes Turner Gill and the staff know what they are doing.
“There’s a reason for it and we had a good practice,” Rojas said. “Coach is a great coach, he’s surrounded by great coaches and we do everything for a reason. The coaches will always try to put us in a good situation.”

Bumgarner, Torres spark S.F.'s rebound

Colts jersey
The Giants needed a well-pitched game and some key hitting for a bounce-back win following a bummer of a loss Monday night, and they received both.
From the same guy: Madison Bumgarner.
That was just the half of it. With Bumgarner gone after six cheap nfl jerseys
innings and the score tied 2-2 in the eighth, Andres Torres homered and Buster Posey smacked a bases-loaded double off the brick wall in right field, allowing the Giants to beat the Rockies 5-2 and exhale.
Bumgarner surrendered one run and hit an RBI double that put the Giants ahead 2-1 in the fifth, so forgive him if he was anticipating the first home victory of his career. Problem is, reliever Jeremy Affeldt yielded Melvin Mora's game-tying homer with two outs in the eighth, a rare shot into the arcade by a right-handed hitter.
As a result, Bumgarner got a no-decision but a bunch of praise inside a giddy clubhouse made giddier by the fact the Giants narrowed the Padres' first-place lead to four games, smallest since Aug. 16.
"Guys came in today, and it seemed everyone put that behind us," Posey said of Monday's ninth-inning downer in a 2-1 loss. "You have to."
No ninth-inning funny business this time. Closer Brian Wilson, working on his third straight day, needed eight pitches to retire the side in order.
Torres' homer, his 14th, was high in the night, landed over the right-field wall and Indianapolis Colts jersey
broke the tie, prompting manager Bruce Bochy to say, "I didn't know if he got enough of it, but we were blowing on it."
Rockies reliever Matt Belisle was so frazzled that he picked up Freddy Sanchez's bunt on the next pitch and threw it so high to first base that Jason Giambi didn't budge. Two walks later, Posey - batting sixth - faced Joe Beimel and banged the ball off the bricks.
Within moments, the Padres' 7-4 loss in Arizona was posted on the scoreboard, turning good times into better times for the crowd of 31,099.
Asked about his opposite-field power, Posey smiled and said, "You should ask Mora. He hit it better than I did."
Monday's tough loss brought back memories of probably the toughest defeat of 2009, a 6-4 decision Aug. 24 when Ryan Spilborghs hit a game-ending grand slam off Merkin Valdez at Coors Field in the 14th - after the Giants scored three times in the top of the 14th for a 4-1 lead.
The Giants hope to draw from that day's aftermath. They won five of Dallas Cowboys jersey
six games, including a three-game sweep of the Rockies in San Francisco, and finished the season 21-16. Not good enough for the playoffs, but it showed the upsetting loss a mile high didn't devastate them.
"That was as gut-wrenching as any loss I've been in," Bochy said. "We bounced back from that. That's why I'm not worried about it."
The run off Bumgarner followed consecutive walks and an infield hit that loaded the bases for Clint Barmes, who hit a sacrifice fly. The Giants scored in the first inning when Emil Rogers caught a spike on a shoelace, and balked home Sanchez.

Rangers' hopes rest with Wilson, Lewis

Colts jersey
Tampa Bay's three-game sweep of Texas is nothing to incite panic. A playoff series between the Rays and Rangers would be different for at least three reasons.
One is that you would have to believe the Rangers will football jersey
possess a healthier lineup in October. No Nelson Cruz or Ian Kinsler, not much Michael Young in this series - that has to make an impact.
Two is that Game 3 would be played in Arlington if the Rays finish with the best record in the AL and the Rangers' record is third best among division winners.
Three - and this gets to the real heart of the matter when you talk about the Rangers and the playoffs - is that Tampa Bay did not face C. J. Wilson or Colby Lewis.
Texas saw the Rays' best. A rotation of David Price, Matt Garza and James Shields is probably just how manager Joe Maddon will line up his pitchers for the first round of the playoffs.
Price is their 15-game winning ace, just a stud rookie marking time in the bullpen two years ago when the Rays reached the World Series. Garza had a no-hitter earlier this month. Shields, though he has struggled this season, is an 11-game winner who dominated Rangers bats Wednesday and is the only Rays pitcher who owns a World Series victory.
While Cliff Lee would certainly pitch Game 1, just as he did Monday night at Tropicana Field, you won't be seeing Tommy Hunter or Derek Holland starting Games 2 or 3.
The magic has worn off Hunter's hot summer start. All those people three weeks ago who were saying, "Hunter doesn't have great stuff, but he just wins games," are now limiting their remarks to the start of that sentence. And Holland showed in his return Wednesday afternoon that his climb toward success as a major league starter has not yet begun.
Like it or not, assuming the Rangers' eight-game lead in the AL West doesn't vanish, the team is likely to advance as far in the postseason as Lewis and Wilson can carry them.
Imagine that.
Lewis was pitching in Japan at this time a year ago. Rangers fans, already excited about the 2010 season because of the young pitchers the franchise had on the horizon, did not have Lewis in their sights. In the Land of the Rising Sun, Lewis' career seemed surely to be setting.
As for Wilson, his spring training pursuit of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
a place in Ron Washington's rotation was viewed as somewhere between an indictment of the team's starters and a self-serving rejection of his eighth-inning role.
Instead, the Rangers would not have a healthy lead in the West without Lewis' and Wilson's 20 victories as starters.
More wins will be needed in October.
The Rangers can't rely on Lee alone and, it should be obvious, can't expect wins in all of his starts, either. Texas is 3-5 when Lee takes the mound. The confidence his presence creates has not yet translated into victories, in part because of the poor defense behind him in recent starts against the Rays and Yankees.
The pressure will be on Lewis and Wilson to shine in the spotlight, to hold their own against Tampa Bay's Garza and Shields or the Yankees' Andy Pettitte and Phil Hughes perhaps.
To be honest, you have to like the Ranger pitchers' chances.
Lee, Wilson and Lewis rank fourth, 11th and 14th in ERA among AL starters. In a postseason of Rangers, Rays, Yankees and Twins, they would rank first, sixth and ninth. That gives Lewis and Wilson at the very least a fighting chance despite their lack of experience.
The Rangers aren't going to find a magic pitching formula between now and October. Scott Feldman and Rich Harden aren't turning back the clock any more than Holland is pushing it into the future.
The Rangers had a very disappointing series against Tampa Bay, but they weren't close to full strength at bat or, beyond Lee's start, on the mound.
That will change when the postseason gets here.
It's up to Colby Lewis and C. J. Wilson to prove that beating Texas three times in Minnesota Vikings jersey
October will be much more difficult than it was in less than 48 hours of mid-August.
Rays 8, Rangers 6
Evan Longoria hit a solo homer and drove in four runs to help Tampa Bay complete a sweep of the three-game series between potential playoff opponents. 5C

Sox fail to finish sweep vs. M's;Homestand ends still 5-1/2 behind

Colts jersey
BOSTON - The only way this split with the Mariners would have felt good for the Red Sox is if it had a banana in it.
With time running out on their bid to make the playoffs, the Sox have to do better than winning two of every three, and that's not easy, as the homestand that concluded yesterday showed.
Boston was 6-3 on it, but remains 5-1/2 games nfl jerseys
behind the Rays and Yankees.
Yesterday, the Sox won the afternoon game, 5-3, behind Josh Beckett and lost the second game to Felix Hernandez, 4-2, with Tim Wakefield making an emergency start.
Wakefield had to pitch when Daisuke Matsuzaka came down with a sore back, forcing the Sox to push Jon Lester - the scheduled starter last night - to tomorrow night, when Matsuzaka was supposed to pitch.
"We had to kind of get (things settled) in a hurry," Terry Francona said. "Wakefield did a great job under the circumstances. It's a lot to ask, facing one of the better pitchers in the league, and he gave us a chance to win."
Wakefield, now 3-10, went 5-2/3 innings and took the loss.
Hernandez is right behind Boston's Clay Buchholz in the American League ERA rankings at 2.47, but last night's win merely evened his record at 10-10. He is 4-1 lifetime vs. Boston, and 3-0 against the Sox in four career starts at Fenway Park.
Hernandez worked into the eighth, with Brandon League coming on and getting the save. The two Seattle pitchers combined to give up only five hits against a Sox batting order that, after Adrian Beltre was ejected, included Yamaico Navarro, Daniel Nava, Ryan Kalish and Kevin Cash.
Boston got a run in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch and another in the sixth on Colts jersey
J.D. Drew's home run. The Sox had a great chance to tie it in the eighth when they had men at first and second with one out, and second and third with two out, but David Ortiz lined to left, ending the threat.
In the day game, Beckett snapped his three-game losing streak, but once again fell apart for no apparent reason. Beckett was unhittable for six innings, then a batting practice pitcher in the seventh when he gave up a pair of home runs. That led Terry Francona to be as close to critical as he comes.
"The first six were tremendous," Francona said. "Then there's a solo homer - OK. Then he gets behind (Casey Kotchman) and all of a sudden it's 4-3. It's similar to what's happened before. It happens pretty quickly."
The Sox snapped a 0-0 tie with four runs in the sixth. The way Beckett was pitching, it looked like Francona could give his varsity bullpen - Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon - the afternoon off. That changed in a flash, though.
"The biggest inning," Francona said, "is when, after you score, you want to put up a zero on the board. We've got to do better with that. ... He's got some hurdles to overcome."
Beckett was obviously peeved when he went to the dugout, and that emotion was directed at himself.
"There was nobody else to be mad at," he said.
Asked what would stay in his mind about this start, the six great innings or the one Cowboys jersey
awful one, Beckett replied, "I don't know. It's a good question."
Offensively, Boston had seven hits. Marco Scutaro was 2 for 4 and Daniel Nava had a two-run single in the sixth.
A 6-3 record on a homestand is pretty good, but the Sox really needed to go 7-2. For all of their hard work in playing .667 baseball, they are exactly where they were when the homestand began.
Which might give them something like a splitting headache.

NFL sends message amid Sainz scandal

Colts jersey
The NFL reminded all 32 teams Wednesday about the right way to treat women reporters, following complaints about the behavior of some New York Jets players.
Ines Sainz of Mexico's TV Azteca was at a practice session nfl jerseys
Saturday doing a story on quarterback Mark Sanchez, and it is alleged one coach and various players tried to run at her and throw balls at her during a passing drill.
Players also allegedly made catcalls and hooting noises in the locker room towards her after practice.
Wednesday's memo reaffirmed NFL policy: "By law, women Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
must be granted the same rights to perform their jobs as men. Please remember that women reporters are professionals and should be treated as such."
An earlier Jets statement said the team was working with the league "to gather the facts and take any appropriate steps necessary to maintain a respectful environment for the media."
At the request of Jets brass, the Association of Women in Sports Media is hosting an "educational session" with the team in the next week because of the locker-room incident.
"If Jets players, coaches and staff ... are found to have acted in unprofessional and harassing behavior toward Ms. Sainz, we expect and demand reprimand and punishment by the NFL and Jets," the group said.
Sainz said Monday night that she considered the Minnesota Vikings jersey
on-field antics "a joke, so I didn't pay attention to it." But she said she took the locker-room catcalls more seriously, noting, "I felt very uncomfortable."
"Women should be treated professionally, and they deserve to be treated with respect," she said.

Vincent Jackson issue resolved

Colts jersey
According to various reports, the issue whether San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Jackson will be unavailable to play three or six games this season has been resolved. Jackson can play in the fifth game of any team he’s traded to, but there are various conditions.
According to a statement posted on NFL.com, Jackson must be nfl jersey
traded by Sept. 22 by 4 p.m. ET, or he will be out at least six games. Also, a trade of Jackson can’t happen until Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. ET.
Here are the other conditions:
- If Jackson signs a contract with the Chargers and is traded by 4 p.m. ET, on Wednesday, September 22, he will be placed on the Commissioner Exempt list for three games, retroactive to game two of the season. So if Jackson is traded by the September 22 deadline, he’ll be able to play for his new team by the team’s fifth game.
- If Jackson is not traded by 4 p.m. ET on September 22, he will serve the remainder of his three-game suspension and be placed on the roster exempt list until the day following the third game scheduled after the date he actually reports, regardless of any subsequent trade.
- During the short moratorium until Friday at 4 p.m. ET on Friday, any team interested in trading for Jackson must receive permission in advance from Chargers before speaking with Jackson’s agents (Neil Schwartz and Jonathan Feinsod) about possible contract terms. The trade compensation must be negotiated directly with the Chargers. The Chargers can’t trade Jackson until the moratorium has expired.
- If Jackson is traded before the September 22 deadline, he Colts jersey
will be allowed to report to the new team and, at the discretion of the team, be eligible to participate in those activities permitted by the Substances of Abuse Policy for the remainder of his suspension. After the third game of Jackson's suspension, he will be permitted to practice with the new club pursuant to the roster exempt rules in the week prior to the new club's fourth regular-season game, but will be unavailable to play, and cannot be paid, until the fifth game.
Jackson, who was already suspended for the first three games of the regular season for violating the NFL’s Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse, was expected to miss an additional three games because the Chargers put him on their roster exempt list.
The NFLPA argued that the only way the exemption should be used if he’s still on the Chargers, not if he’s traded to another team, meaning the exemption should not be transferrable. The NFL’s argument was that the roster exemption should travel with him to any team that he’s traded to.
At least now for Jackson, any team wants to acquire him understands what it will take to get a deal done.
Fourth-year WR Legedu Naanee is currently filling for Cowboys jersey
Jackson with the starters.
Teams that make sense to have interest in Jackson based on need include the St. Louis Rams, Minnesota Vikings, and Washington Redskins.

Buchholz helped Boston complete that sweep

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Clay Buchholz’s(notes) bid for his first AL Cy Young Award has taken a severe hit recently. The Boston Red Sox’s playoff hopes are also dim.
The All-Star right-hander looks to rebound from his worst performance of cheap nfl jerseys
the season as the Red Sox attempt to sweep a three-game series from the lowly Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.
Buchholz (15-7, 2.53 ERA) has a career high in wins while ranking second in the AL in ERA. He appeared to be a serious contender for the Cy Young, going 7-1 with a 1.93 ERA from June 15-Aug. 22 before posting an 0-2 record and 5.40 ERA over his last three starts.
Buchholz’s chance to become the first Red Sox pitcher to win the Cy Young since Pedro Martinez(notes) in 2000 may have been damaged greatly in his most recent outing Friday. He was tagged for five runs and five hits with four walks in one-plus inning of a 5-0 loss at Oakland.
“I’m not worried about the whole Cy Young deal,” Buchholz told the Red Sox’s official website. “I’m worried about this team winning games. It was just a poor effort on my part. I know you’re going to have bad games, but a bad game for a pitcher on this staff is going out and giving up a couple of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
runs in four or five innings, not one inning.”
Boston (81-64), which is 6 1/2 games back of Tampa Bay for the wild card, has won three in a row after losing nine of 13. The Red Sox beat the Mariners 9-6 on Tuesday to put themselves in position for their first sweep at Seattle since July 21-23, 2008.
Buchholz helped Boston complete that sweep, allowing three runs with seven strikeouts in 5 1-3 innings of a 6-3, 12-inning win in his only appearance against the Mariners.
Adrian Beltre(notes), a member of the Mariners from 2005-09, is hitting .455 with two homers, four RBIs and eight runs over the last nine games. The third baseman went 3 for 4 with a double Tuesday, setting a franchise record with his major league-leading 71st extra-base hit.
The Mariners (55-90) own the worst record in the AL and have dropped six in a row.
They’ll turn to David Pauley(notes) (2-7, 4.39), who is 0-3 with a 5.55 ERA in his last four starts while getting one total run of support.
That rough stretch for the right-hander started with a 5-3 loss at Boston on Minnesota Vikings jersey
Aug. 25, when he allowed four runs in 5 2-3 innings after winning consecutive starts for his first two victories in the majors.
Pauley, who was in the Red Sox system from 2004-08, was slightly better in his most recent outing Friday, giving up three runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 4-3, 14-inning road loss to Los Angeles.

Ortiz 3-run homer leads Red Sox over Mariners 9-6

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
SEATTLE (AP)—David Ortiz(notes) was starting to get more than a little frustrated.
In the sixth inning, he snapped his bat over his knee after popping up to third base. His next time up, he made the ball pay, instead.
His three-run homer off Brandon League(notes) in the eighth inning gave the football jersey
Boston Red Sox a 9-6 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.
“I’ve been missing a lot of pitches lately and I don’t know why,” Ortiz said. “I got frustrated by it. I’m not a guy that’s used to missing pitches because I don’t get that many pitches to hit.”
“You either get on top or under the ball a half an inch different. Drives me nuts.”
Jed Lowrie(notes) homered twice for Boston, which is seven games behind New York and third in the AL East.
Despite only having one home run in April, Ortiz has now gone over 30 for the sixth time in his career, matching Manny Ramirez(notes) for second most in franchise history behind Ted Williams’ eight seasons of 30-plus.
“I’m not even close to what Mr. Williams was,” Ortiz said. “What he meant for this organization, he played for so many years and with so many great names. For my name to be right next to him is a huge compliment for me.”
League (9-7) entered the game in relief of starter Luke French(notes) and quickly retired his first two batters. Victor Martinez(notes) and Adrian Beltre(notes) followed with a pair of singles and League served up a fastball on the inner half of the plate that Ortiz drilled over the wall in right-center field to give the Red Sox a 7-5 lead.
“It was the perfect example or what happens when your sinkerball doesn’t sink,” League said.
Mariners manager Daren Brown had lefty Garrett Olson(notes) available in the bullpen to face Ortiz, who is batting just .208 with two home runs against left-handers, but decided to stick with League.
“League’s got good stuff. I’d trust him against anybody,” Brown said. “In the Dallas Cowboys jersey
same situation tomorrow. League’s got good stuff, I’d have no doubt he’d get the job done.”
After League walked Varitek to lead off the ninth, Eric Patterson(notes) stole second as a pinch runner, moved to third on a ground out by Daniel Nava(notes) and scored on a fielder’s choice by Ryan Kalish(notes). Josh Reddick(notes) followed with an RBI single to make it 9-5.
“They take the lead and David, with one real good swing, changes the whole complexion of the game,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.
The Mariners added a run in the ninth inning. Rich Hill(notes) (1-0) made his first appearance since July 27, 2009 with Baltimore.
Lowrie hit his first of two home runs off Mariners starter Luke French in the second inning with a runner on to put the Red Sox on top.
Lowrie struck again in the fourth with a solo shot over a leaping Michael Saunders(notes) to take a 4-2 lead. French managed to settle down and retire his final 12 batters.
Daisuke Matsuzaka(notes) drilled Josh Wilson(notes) to lead off the fifth inning and Seattle capitalized on the mistake. Ichiro Suzuki(notes) doubled to left-center field to score Wilson from first. After Chone Figgins(notes) reached on a bunt, Branyan hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Suzuki and tie the game at 4.
“There’s times, there’s innings he makes it tough on himself,” Francona said of Matsuzaka. “He looks healthy. Ball is coming out of hand good. Just he wasn’t terribly consistent tonight.”
A leadoff single from Suzuki chased Matsuzaka in the seventh inning. Figgins sacrificed Suzuki to second base and Gutierrez drove him in with a two-out double off the wall in left-center field to give the Mariners the lead.
Notes: Red Sox C Jason Varitek(notes) got his first start since June 30 against Tampa Bay. Varitek missed two months with a Minnesota Vikings jersey
fracture in his right foot. He was 0 for 3 with a walk. … The Mariners ran on Varitek six times, stealing four bases. … 3B Adrian Beltre set a Red Sox record with his 71st extra-base hit of the season, a double in the second inning, moving out of a tie with Wade Boggs. The double also moved him into the lead for most extra base hits in the majors this season, surpassing Evan Longoria(notes) of Tampa Bay. … Figgins’ four hits were a season high.

Colts S Sanders undergoes surgery

Steelers jersey
The Colts announced Wednesday afternoon that safety Bob Sanders(notes) underwent surgery by Dr. James Andrews for a torn biceps tendon.
Sanders, who suffered the injury in the Week one loss at nfl jerseys
Houston, will remain on the 53-man active roster at this time as the club monitors his rehabilitation.
The club stated that "any timetable for the possibility of a return remains undetermined."
The 2007 Defensive Player of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
the Year has a long injury history. He has played in only 46 games in his seven-year career, including eight total in 2008-09. A torn biceps also ended his '09 season in Week Eight.
The way we see it
The good news is that the team hasn't yet placed Sanders on injured reserve, which would end his season. However, that could be the team's course of action down the road.
Backup Melvin Bullit, who has started 21 games in the past two seasons and is familiar with the team's defensive system, is a capable replacement — Bullit came up with a big interception in the second quarter against the Texans — but he does not provide the same type of Minnesota Vikings jersey
physical presence that Sanders brings to the field.

Bears DT Harris responds to Sapp’s comments

Steelers jersey
Bears DT Tommie Harris(notes) responded to a recent critique in a discussion with reporters in the team's locker room on Wednesday.
Former Buccaneers and Raiders DT Warren Sapp(notes) called Harris a nfl throwback jerseys
"blind dog in a meat house" in an interview with a Chicago sports talk radio show Wednesday morning.
"That's what I am," Harris said. "I agree with what Warren says. Warren knows my (phone) number though. If he has anything to say, he can call me."
Harris was asked if those comments might motivate him heading into Sunday's game against the Cowboys.
"I could care less what he says," Harris said. "It looks like he's got that job and it's just to blast football players, not to motivate. It doesn't bother me at all. I just know I have to go out there and do my job."
Harris said Sapp, an NFL Network analyst, usually tweets or texts him, but he didn't ask Sapp to call him to discuss the "blind dog" comment.
"I was surprised," he said, before delivering a message to Sapp. "Thanks for saying that on air, but you know my number. Call me anytime, Warren."
INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Colts safety Bob Sanders(notes) is out indefinitely following surgery to repair a torn biceps muscle in his right arm.
The 2007 NFL defensive player of the year was injured on Dallas Cowboys jersey
Houston’s first offensive series Sunday when he landed awkwardly on his shoulders.
Sanders was scheduled to meet with Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion Wednesday. The team issued its statement while players were still practicing.
For now, the Colts have decided to keep Sanders on the active roster though they did sign safety DaJuan Morgan(notes) earlier Wednesday. To make room for Morgan, the Colts waived offensive lineman Joe Reitz(notes).
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP)—Denver Nuggets coach George Karl was a special guest of Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels on Wednesday.
Both men were jokingly asked if Karl was at Dove Valley to seek advice on how to handle a superstar who wants out of town. The Nuggets are trying to persuade All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony to sign an extension.
McDaniels, who has sent Pro Bowl players Jay Minnesota Vikings jersey
Cutler(notes) and Brandon Marshall(notes) packing in his short time in Denver, feigned ignorance on the matter.
Karl said he didn’t know how to answer the question, either, but added: “Fortunately, it’s not my expertise or my realm of responsibility. My realm is to try to convince Melo to stay. And I’ll continue to do that when I have those opportunities.”

Grant led Green Bay in rushing each of the last three years

Minnesota Vikings jersey
The Green Bay Packers won their opener despite an imperfect performance from their star quarterback, but any more victories in 2010 must come without contributions from their top running back.
The Packers begin their home schedule - and life without nfl throwback jerseys
Ryan Grant(notes) - on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills, who have three healthy rushers but major offensive problems to correct.
Grant led Green Bay in rushing each of the last three years, but he won’t again after suffering a season-ending ankle injury during a 27-20 win at Philadelphia last Sunday.
“When you lose a running back of Ryan’s caliber, it’s a big loss, but this is something we have to deal with and move forward from as a team,” general manager Ted Thompson said in a statement.
Brandon Jackson(notes), who carried 18 times for 63 yards against the Eagles, will start in place of Grant. He’ll likely get some help from fullback John Kuhn(notes), who scored the Packers’ lone rushing touchdown with a three-yard plunge.
Aaron Rodgers(notes) may also carry a heavier load for the Packers, who are hopeful of an even better finish after going 11-5 and reaching the playoffs last year.
Rodgers threw for 4,434 yards and 30 touchdowns with seven interceptions in 2009, but was picked off twice last weekend and wasn’t pleased after going 19 of 31 for 188 yards and two TDs.
“I played terrible. It was as bad as I can play. I’ve got to be better,” said Rodgers, who had reached 200 yards passing in 20 of his previous 23 games. “I missed a lot of throws. The defense played good. We made enough plays to win. I personally made too many dumb mistakes.”
That defense limited the Eagles to three points in the first half, knocking Philadelphia quarterback Kevin Kolb(notes) out of the game on a big hit from standout linebacker Clay Matthews(notes).
A Pro Bowler as a rookie last year, Matthews overcame a preseason hamstring injury and picked up where he left off with two sacks, seven tackles and a forced fumble in the opener.
“We know what we have, we know what we can do,” Matthews said. “It’s all about putting it together now.”
A similar performance by Matthews won’t make things any easier for Buffalo, which wasn’t able to do much offensively during a 15-10 home loss to Miami last Sunday.
The Bills managed 166 yards - the fewest of Indianapolis Colts jersey
any NFL team in Week 1 - and nine first downs. Their three-pronged rushing attack of Fred Jackson(notes), Marshawn Lynch(notes) and rookie C.J. Spiller(notes) combined for 38 yards.
Back as the starting quarterback after losing the job last year, Trent Edwards(notes) went 18 of 34 for 139 yards and a touchdown.
“Obviously, it didn’t go as we planned - and that would be an understatement,” first-year coach Chan Gailey said. “And that’s mostly my fault.
“I know where we want to go, and we’ve got a plan to get there. I told the players, ‘I don’t know if it’s going to take two games, five games, eight games. I don’t know how many it’s going to take, but we’re going to get there.”
While Gailey is new in Buffalo, offensive problems are not. The Bills have ranked no better than 25th in total yards in any of the last seven seasons, during which their AFC-worst playoff drought has reached 10 years.
They spent the ninth overall draft pick on the dynamic Spiller in hopes of jolting their attack, but after a promising preseason the former Clemson star had six yards on seven carries in his debut.
“I let a couple runs get away from me,” Spiller said. “I was trying to play too fast, but that just comes with getting adjusted. And now I’ve got a good understanding of what it will be like.”
Lynch had only three carries. The former first-round pick played at California with Rodgers and may be a potential trade target for the Packers.
Rodgers was a member of the Golden Bears the last time he appeared in the same game as Edwards, who attended rival Stanford.
The Bills will have at least one Minnesota Vikings jersey
major hole to fill defensively as they attempt to slow down Rodgers. Middle linebacker Paul Posluszny(notes) is expected to miss about three weeks after injuring his knee Sunday.
The status of outside linebacker Reggie Torbor(notes) is unclear after he missed the opener with a chest injury.

Mets’ Beltran out with tendinitis in left knee

Indianapolis Colts jersey

NEW YORK (AP)—Carlos Beltran(notes) is out of the New York Mets’ lineup with tendinitis in his left knee caused by overcompensating during rehabilitation from surgery on his right knee.
Beltran says he felt pain in the knee after stepping hard at cheap nfl jerseys
first base during his first at-bat against Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Philadelphia Friday night, but he was able to finish the game. He is not certain if he will play Sunday.
Beltran played with tendinitis in both knees in 2006 and ’07.
The center fielder was told by doctors after having offseason surgery on the right knee that he might develop the condition. Doctors noted it’s natural to put more stress on the healthy leg while rebuilding strength in the injured Minnesota Vikings jersey
one.
Angel Pagan(notes) was in center field for Saturday’s game against the Phillies.

Latos belongs in the NL Cy Young discussion

Indianapolis Colts jersey

SAN DIEGO – Patrons and employees at the East Village Tavern and Bowl a few blocks from Petco Park agree on who should win the National League Cy Young Award: the talkative young blond guy who drops by late on nights the Padres are in town, gabbing with the football jersey
bouncers, eating appetizers and bowling the occasional game – left-handed.
Mat Latos(notes) pitches with his right hand and won’t jeopardize his health by rolling a 16-pound ball with it. He has grown up enough to know that much. The playoff chances of the reeling San Diego Padres might hinge on his continued ability as a stopper, a pitcher who lifts a sagging team every five days. Latos knows that, too.
As for baseball’s most prestigious pitching award, Latos becomes uncharacteristically humble at its mention.
“Having Cy Young and my name being in the same sentence alone would make my day,” he said. “But it wouldn’t make my year. The passion I show on the mound and the trust and respect I’ve gained from my teammates, the bonds and friendships I’ve made, you can’t trade that for anything.”
Latos faces the San Francisco Giants on Sunday and will be matched against two-time reigning Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum(notes), whose off year could serve as a cautionary tale. Giants manager Bruce Bochy has suggested that Lincecum took his dominant stuff for granted, that he needs to devote more time to conditioning.
Even without Lincecum, legitimate candidates for the NL Cy Young are plentiful. Early on it appeared Colorado’s Ubaldo Jimenez(notes) would run away with it when his ERA was under 1.50 through mid-June and he started 15-1. Then Florida’s Josh Johnson(notes) was the leader when his ERA stayed under 2.00 until early August. Adam Wainwright(notes) of the Cardinals became the favorite by mid-August before losing four decisions in a row. Tim Hudson(notes) of the Braves remains on the periphery, although the comeback player of the year award might be a better fit.
Now steady workhorse Roy Halladay(notes) of the resurgent Philadelphia Phillies is at the forefront of any Cy Young handicapping, leading the league in innings, strikeouts, complete games and shutouts.
All are veterans and all but Johnson pitch for playoff contenders. No wonder Latos, who leads the league in ERA and lowest batting average against, is honored to be in the discussion.
“I’m just a 22-year-old kid who wants to compete,” he said. “I thrive off it. I love the energy. I love the atmosphere. I know I’ve matured. I hear it day in and day out from people. It’s great to make those kinds of strides and it keeps me wondering, what am I going to be like in the next five years? How mature? How composed?”
In spring training, Padres manager Bud Black made a simple request of Latos: Be reliable. How is this for a response? In his last start, a seven-inning, 10-strikeout gem against the Dodgers, Latos broke the major league record of 14 consecutive starts of Dallas Cowboys jersey
five or more innings with two or fewer runs allowed, a mark held by Greg Maddux(notes) and Mike Scott.
Latos’ transformation from an abrasive, immature jerk trying to harness his immense talent to a well-liked, dependable staff ace is a remarkable tale involving a promise to his dying grandfather and a particularly persuasive pitching coach. Another breakthrough came in December when he was home visiting his parents in Virginia. Latos was watching a movie on DVD with his 21-year-old first cousin, Josh Branick. Latos began popping off as usual, and Branick, whom only-child Latos says is as close as a brother, got in his face and asked him if he was ever going to grow up.
“It really sunk in,” Latos said. “I remember every detail. We were watching ‘Underworld: Rise of the Lycans.’ The fireplace was going. I had both of my dogs lying at my feet. The Christmas tree was lit up behind us. I have a deep appreciation for what Josh said. He doesn’t know it yet. I haven’t given him credit.”
Already Latos had made strides. He was so difficult to handle in high school that he fell to the 11th round of the 2006 draft even though scouts throughout baseball agreed he had first-round talent. The current mid-August deadline to sign draftees hadn’t been implemented yet, so the Padres didn’t sign him until he spent a year at Broward Community College. Scout Joe Bochy (brother of Giants manager Bruce Bochy) watched every start and came away convinced he was worth the gamble. The Padres paid Latos $1.25 million a few days before he would have gone back into the 2007 draft.
“Money had quite a bit to do with it, I’m not going to lie,” Latos said. “Joe Bochy expressed a lot of interest in me. I showed a little more maturity than I did in high school and they offered a lot more money.”
Latos’ maturation continued through his rapid ascent through the minor leagues. He stopped yelling at teammates for making errors, stopped snatching at return throws from the catcher when he believed an umpire missed a call, and toned down the self-loathing when he didn’t perform up to his own expectations.
“I learned to breathe through my eyelids,” he said. “When I was younger, I always had an excuse. Now, I throw a pitch and I can accept that I made a mistake and somebody hit it. How can I be mad at somebody else on the field? I’m never going to be perfect, so how can I expect anybody else to be perfect?”
“I still have that hotness in me. There are plenty of times I want to let it out.”
In Latos’ last start, Rafael Furcal(notes) of the Dodgers hit a hanging changeup for an RBI single. As Latos backed up home plate, he unleashed a string of Minnesota Vikings jersey
expletives that were overheard by umpire Hunter Wendelstedt.
Wendelstedt: “Were you talking to me or talking to yourself? Because you were freaking me out.”
Latos: “Oh, I was mad at myself. I was talking to myself. I apologize.”

Hawpe’s slam sparks Rays over Blue Jays 13-1

Indianapolis Colts jersey

TORONTO (AP)—Thanks to another strong start from Wade Davis(notes), the Tampa Bay Rays made a six-run inning stand up this time.
Brad Hawpe(notes) hit a grand slam, Davis won his seventh straight decision and the Rays routed the Toronto Blue Jays 13-1 Saturday.
“Of course you’re going to look at the offensive outburst, but Wade Davis really pitched well today. He permitted that to happen,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. “I thought he had really nfl jersey
good stuff. He had a good look about him. That set the whole thing up.”
Kelly Shoppach(notes) also homered as the AL wild-card leaders won for the third time in four games.
Davis (12-9) improved to 3-0 with a 3.24 ERA in four starts since a stint on the 15-day disabled list caused by a strained right shoulder.
“He’s come off the injury and I believe he’s throwing the ball better than I’ve ever seen,” Maddon said. “I’m talking about last year in September, and I’m talking at any point during this season. I’m talking velocity, depth on breaking ball, demeanor on the mound, awareness. All those things are getting better and that’s why he’s pitched so well.”
Tampa Bay scored six runs in the first inning of Friday’s series opener but blew an 8-1 lead before winning 9-8.
This time, Davis made sure there’d be no Toronto comeback. The right-hander, who leads AL rookies in wins, allowed one run and seven hits in seven innings, struck out six and walked three.
“I felt good and I felt under control,” Davis said. “My fastball was good, my command was good early and I established it. To get a big lead like that it makes things a little easier.”
Davis, who has not lost since June 27 against Arizona, matched Jeff Niemann(notes) (2009-10) and Mark Hendrickson(notes) (2005) for the most consecutive victories in Rays history.
Not surprisingly, Davis said his confidence is soaring.
“It’s definitely higher than it’s ever been,” he said. “Not in an arrogant way at all, just as far as being able to repeat my delivery. If you can repeat your delivery, you’re going to be able to make pitches and I’ve been doing that pretty good lately.”
Hawpe’s homer was his second with the Rays, who signed him to a minor league contract on Aug. 27. He went 2 for 5 and scored twice.
Shoppach hit a two-run homer off Indianapolis Colts jersey
Rommie Lewis(notes) in the eighth.
Lyle Overbay(notes) replied with a solo shot for the Blue Jays, who have connected in 13 straight games, matching a season high. Toronto also went deep in 13 consecutive games from July 3-20.
Toronto leads the majors with 223 home runs, including a big league-high 127 at home.
Ricky Romero(notes) (12-9) allowed six runs, three hits and three walks in four innings, striking out seven. He breezed through the first three innings, allowing just a single to Evan Longoria(notes), but gave up six runs in the fourth.
Jason Bartlett(notes) drew a leadoff walk, Romero hit Carl Crawford(notes) with a pitch and Ben Zobrist(notes) hit a two-run double with one out. Romero loaded the bases with walks to Carlos Pena and Sean Rodriguez(notes), and Hawpe homered to right for his third career slam and first this season.
“Romero was really good in the beginning and then all of a sudden we jumped on him and had that big inning,” Maddon said. “Of course, Brad’s grand slam really put us over the top. He had some really good at bats today.”
Romero had no explanation for his sudden lapse in command.
“It’s one of those mysterious things that happens in baseball, you just lose it all of a sudden,” Romero said. “I don’t know how to explain it. I think that for the first time all year I got frustrated at myself for not throwing strikes.”
Overbay homered off Davis in the fourth, but the Rays made it to 7-1 when Zobrist and Pena hit back-to-back doubles off Brad Mills(notes) in the fifth.
Toronto loaded the bases in the bottom half but, after a visit by pitching coach Jim Hickey, Davis struck out Overbay to end the threat.
NOTES: Carl Crawford tripled and is 15 for Minnesota Vikings jersey
32 with nine extra base hits, including four triples, in the past eight games. … Toronto 3B Edwin Encarnacion(notes), out since Aug. 29 with a sore left wrist, rejoined the team Saturday and is eligible to come off the 15-day DL Monday. … The Rays are a major league-best 33-17 when facing a left-handed starter. … Rays OF Desmond Jennings(notes) got his first major league hit, a pinch-double in the eighth. … Tampa Bay is a major league-best 43-29 on the road.

Modano skates for 1st time with Red Wings

Indianapolis Colts jersey

DETROIT (AP)—Mike Modano(notes) grew up dreaming of skating at Joe Louis Arena as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. He actually did it Thursday morning.
The 40-year-old center, who signed a one-year, free agent deal cheap nfl jerseys
with the Red Wings worth $1.25 million and the possibility of $500,000 more through performance-based bonuses, joined most of his new teammates during an informal skate.
“It feels good. Feels great to be at the Joe skating again,” said Modano, a native of the Detroit suburb of Livonia who has spent his entire 20-year NHL career with the Dallas Stars/Minnesota North Stars organization.
He talked about getting accustomed to new routines each day and how he had tearful goodbyes with several of the close friends he made in Dallas.
“Little by little, I’m getting accustomed to things,” Modano said.
He also talked about a bit of personal history he has with one of Indianapolis Colts jersey
his new teammates, veteran defenseman Ruslan Salei(notes), who the Red Wings signed as a free agent a few days after they signed Modano.
On Oct. 2, 1999, Salei—then playing with Anaheim—checked Modano from behind and into the boards causing a concussion and neck sprain. Modano and Salei haven’t talked since they became teammates.
“He’s always been a hard guy to play against … Always in your face,” Modano said. He added that Salei inquired about how Modano was doing through other people.
“Just wanted to make sure I was OK,” Modano said.
One of Modano’s projected linemates, Dan Cleary, was also on the ice Thursday.
“Obviously he’s a real good skater,” Cleary said. “He’s excited … He’s back in his hometown.”
Modano, the highest scoring American-born player in Minnesota Vikings jersey
NHL history with 557 goals and 1,359 points, left the arena as a passenger in Todd Bertuzzi’s(notes) SUV. Bertuzzi was one of the Red Wings’ players who Modano knew well and talked to before signing with Detroit.
The eight-time All-Star led Dallas to the Stanley Cup title in 1999. Modano played in the Olympics three times and helped the Americans win silver in 2002.

Blues introduce new goaltender Halak to fans

Indianapolis Colts jersey

ST. LOUIS (AP)—The St. Louis Blues introduced their prize acquisition, goaltender Jaroslav Halak(notes), to his new fans Thursday.
And the 25-year-old Slovakian said the right things football jersey
when he called his phenomenal success with Montreal “a real nice memory,” but part of the past. He says he’s looking now to the future.
The Blues acquired Halak in June and signed him to a four-year contract.
Halak was adored by Canadiens fans as he went 26-13-5 last season, ranked fourth in the NHL with a .940 save percentage and ninth in goals-against average at 2.40. He gained wider fame in the first round of the playoffs by winning three straight games over favored Washington, stopping 131 of 134 shots.
St. Louis fans are hoping for some of that same success. The Blues have made the playoffs just once in the past five seasons.
The summer did not go according to plan for Halak, who became a restricted free agent along with fellow netminder Carey Price(notes).
Somebody had to go and when Blues general manager Doug Armstrong came calling, a trade was worked out. Unrestricted free agent Chris Mason(notes) left St. Louis and wound up signing a two-year deal with Atlanta.
“Back in June when our season ended and we were looking how to improve our team, we set out that we were looking for one more piece to our puzzle,” Armstrong said. “Someone that could grow with this team, someone that had the pedigree, not only of the flash in the pan success that we saw him have in the playoffs and the season too. But when you look at his resume, he’s a winner. He knows how to win, he’s played great goal for a number of years.”
Halak, who helped knock Alex Ovechkin(notes) and Sidney Crosby(notes) out of the same playoff season, has shifted his focus to his new challenge despite the fact he’ll be adored in Montreal now and in the future.
“Do you think about it, yeah. It’s a real nice memory, but that’s in Dallas Cowboys jersey
the past,” Halak said. “We’ve got to move forward and try to do something similar in the future. We’ll see what the future brings. Our goal is to make the playoffs and you never know what’s going to happen then. You look at Philadelphia and us (last season), we ended up in the conference finals that no one really expected.
“It was a great run in the playoffs, it was a great experience, but that’s the past. Everybody needs to do something similar like that in the future. You can’t live on what happened in the past.”
Besides the Capitals, Montreal also eliminated the Penguins in a seven-game series before falling to the Flyers in five games.
“This is a 25-year-old that understands when you go on the road trip, you fight and battle to where you want to get to,” Blues President John Davidson said of Halak. “That’s the type of character player that we want in our organization.”
Halak, sporting a No. 41 third jersey, was flanked by Davidson, Armstrong and team owner Dave Checketts, who obviously was pleased with the events that led up to one of the biggest trades in team history.
“John and Doug called me to report that they were working on a blockbuster trade; those are the days I just dream about,” Checketts said. “They don’t come along very often in your life as an owner. When they do come along, you have to appreciate them.” Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

Halak will bring a 56-34-7 mark in 101 career games to St. Louis. But it will be his first season as a clear-cut No. 1 netminder. Ty Conklin(notes) will serve as his backup.
“I’m looking forward to new fans, a new team and a new organization,” Halak said. “It’s going to be different for sure. But the sooner I get used to it, it’s going to be better.”

NFL Preview 2010: Heat's on Tom Coughlin to avoid repeat of New York Giants disappointing 2009

Vikings jersey

The Giants' locker room was bracing for big changes after the way their miserable 2009 ended. Big Blue wasn't even competitive in its final two games. Their owner was furious. Management could've torn apart everything and nobody would've blinked.
Yet as angry as he was, as embarrassed as football jersey
he was, Jerry Reese refused to join the panic.
"We were 8-8," the Giants GM said. "Not 1-15."
Maybe that's true, but what hovers over the 2010 season is the fact that the Giants' 8-8 record "felt a lot more like 2-14" to co-owner John Mara - a record that would cost most GMs and coaches their jobs. Still, before training camp began, Mara told the Daily News that he had faith in both Reese and coach Tom Coughlin. And he insisted that neither of them would be on "the hot seat" this year.
But it's hard to imagine that another embarrassing season won't cause him to change his mind. Even the players admit that a shake-up could be in order if they flop again this season. But barring a disaster, the Giants are still a young team with most of their key players signed to long-term contracts.
If all goes well, the championship window for this group could still be open for years to come. "I think we're still young," said defensive end Justin Tuck. "I think we've got a few more years together here. After a while, yes, the window will close. But I think Minnesota Vikings jersey
our organization did a great job of bringing in new people, new faces."
"We brought in youth," added defensive tackle Barry Cofield. "And as long as you continue to build through the draft, stay healthy, and you have that franchise quarterback, the window's not closing on us."
That quarterback, of course, is Eli Manning, who despite last year's team struggles is coming off his finest statistical season, with career highs in yards (4,021), touchdowns (27) and completion percentage (62.3). He also is only 29 years old and signed through 2015. And the Giants are convinced he's the biggest piece to any championship puzzle.
"Honestly, when you have a franchise quarterback like we have, I think that window stays open for a while," Cofield said. "I think this is a quarterback-driven league. As long as we have a guy like Eli healthy I think we're going to be competitive."
And it's not as if Manning is all the Giants have. They have a talented group of receivers, led by the 25-year-old Steve Smith, who is the elder statesman. Their top two running backs (Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw) are 28 and 24. The oldest player on Dallas Cowboys jersey
their vaunted defensive line is Rocky Bernard (31). The oldest player in their secondary is Deon Grant (31). And no one else is older than 28 at either position.

NFL Preview 2010: New York Jets position-by-position analysis

Vikings jersey

The chatty Jets have morphed into the most hated team in the league, but will they live up to all the hype? Less than eight months after their surprising run to the AFC Championship Game, Rex Ryan's club has plenty of issues.
Thankfully, Darrelle Revis isn't one of them since the All-Pro nfl jersey
cornerback ended his long holdout and returned to the top-rated defense of 2010. But Mark Sanchez's shaky preseason raises legitimate concerns whether he's ready to take a significant leap in his second season.
The mantra is simple: Super Bowl or bust. For this team, there's no in between.
QUARTERBACK: With a strong supporting cast, Mark Sanchez is in line to take a significant step in his second season. He erased the memories of an erratic rookie regular season with a solid three-game stretch in the playoffs. The intangibles are all there. His leadership skills were apparent during training camp and preseason. Now, it's time for him to take advantage of all the playmakers at his disposal. He'll have to make better decisions and try not to force the ball into coverage like he did several times during his shaky preseason.
RUNNING BACKS: Thomas Jones' departure Minnesota Vikings jersey
opened the door for Shonn Greene, who will be the centerpiece of the ground-and-pound scheme that will include John Conner and Tony Richardson at fullback. But can Greene stay healthy? He has a history of getting nicked up, including rib and ankle injuries last year. LaDainian Tomlinson has adapted quickly to his new team's zone blocking scheme and looks reborn after his first regular dose of preseason work in his 10-year career. The future Hall of Famer also gives Sanchez his first legitimate pass-catching option out of the backfield. Rookie Joe McKnight can't consistently get the tough yards between the tackles.
WIDE RECEIVERS: Getting Santonio Holmes for a fifth-round pick was highway robbery. When the mercurial Holmes returns from his four-game league suspension, watch out. Sanchez, who was Holmes' roommate in Cortland, clicked with the former Super Bowl MVP in camp. Jerricho Cotchery should be able to take advantage of nickel corners in the slot. Braylon Edwards will stretch the field.
TIGHT ENDS: Dustin Keller may be the biggest Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
beneficiary of the revamped offense. Think about it: What linebacker in the league can cover him? None. The third-year pro should exploit those one-on-one matchups in the middle of the field. He's also shown the ability in the preseason to find openings in bracket coverage. Ben Hartsock will be the primary blocking TE again.

NFL Preview 2010: It's Super Bowl or bust for New York Jets - just ask them, they'll tell you

Vikings jersey

He brushed past the fray in silence.
The celebration was underway inside Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis as Rex Ryan made a hard left and disappeared into the losers' locker room.
Despite the Jets' improbable postseason run, the coach nfl throwback jerseys
felt like a failure. For two consecutive seasons, the Super Bowl beckoned. For two consecutive seasons, he came up just short.
So, Ryan made a promise to himself before addressing his team in the aftermath of the Jets' 30-17 loss to the Colts in the AFC Championship Game in February: It's not going to happen again.
Seven months later, that hollow feeling fuels Ryan, the brash leader of the most hated team in the NFL, to end the Jets' 41-year championship drought.
The Jets' 2010 mission statement is as clear as it is bold: Super Bowl or bust.
"We know what we got to do," linebacker Calvin Pace said. "We talk about it every day. It's ingrained in us. It's win or else."
Ryan's bluster has put a target squarely on the Jets, a bull's-eye directed at the chattiest bunch in sports.
From the brash predictions to the fearless claims, the Jets have morphed into the team that everyone loves to despise. "We're the Miami Heat of football," cornerback Antonio Cromartie said.
"It doesn't matter to me," linebacker Bart Scott said. "It's much more fun to be the villain than the hero."
Damn the critics.
Ryan and his players don't care.
So, they've turned up the decibel level, unafraid to talk about their all-or-nothing directive. Even before All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis ended his holdout, when it appeared he might miss the start of the season, the Jets seemed undaunted by the possibility of Indianapolis Colts jersey
embarrassment of falling short of the ultimate goal.
Their words embolden them.
"Some people may think if we took a step closer and just got there, that'd be enough," tight end Dustin Keller said. "But it's not at all. This team is basically Super Bowl or bust."
Ryan speaks with a purpose, speaks from experience and speaks with an impressive resume attached to his every word. Strip away the bravado, look beneath the tough talk, and you'll find one of the smartest football minds of this generation.
Before the Jets' magical run in the playoffs last season, Ryan's defense in Baltimore helped the Ravens reach the AFC Championship Game in 2008.
The Jets' second-year coach has talked openly about Dallas Cowboys jersey
his belief in his team even if he has stopped short of making a Namath-esque Super Bowl guarantee.
"Is it going to be easy? Hell no," Ryan said. "There's no guarantee that this is going to happen. But I sense it's going to happen. I really believe that we're going to do this thing. In my heart, I think this is the time."
