30 Dec 10 Raptors Report Week 22: Toronto Goes from Hopeful To Doubtful

Kevin C. Cox/Getty ImagesThe Raptors 7th seed chances took a major blow on Sunday night. Their opponents, the Golden State Warriors, didn't have much to play for, but out-hustled the Raptors and outplayed them for most of the game. The Raps made a late push, but a missed layup in the dying seconds St. Louis Rams jersey
by Chris Bosh doomed the Raptors. They made a miraculous comeback, but it fell short, and the Raptors now sit two games back of the Charlotte Bobcats. This could have been a mere game, but now with the schedule getting tough, the Raptors will have to win at least five of their last six games to realistically have a chance at 7th.The Raptors finally got some wins, playing with some urgency, but couldn't seal the deal on the final game of the week.Record: 3-1Performance on a scale of 1-10: 7PositivesThe Raptors are playing with urgency and appear to have their mid-season form back. It might be a little too late, but they might do something in the playoffs. Sonny Weems has been spectacular, and Chris Bosh is finally driving the ball and attacking the defenses.NegativesThe Raptors lost to a lowly Golden State team by one point, but they shouldn't have even been in that opportunity. Even without Monta Ellis, the Warriors managed to claw out a victory in Toronto. The Raptors toughness down the stretch of games has to improve.Overall, Tennessee Titans jersey
this week would have been great if Bosh had made that last second layup, but that loss hurt. The Bulls are right on the Raptors tails, and the Raptors will need some Charlotte losses to get that 7th seed. Hopefully they can at least hold that 8th seed.GO RAPS!

29 Dec 10 Suns' Robin Lopez Will Miss the First Round

Christian Petersen/Getty ImagesAccording to Suns head coach Alvin Gentry, Robin Lopez will miss at least the first round of the playoffs. Lopez is currently battling a back injury that caused him to miss the final 10 games of the season. "The visit he had to the doctor was pretty positive, but still we're not having him for the playoffs, not for the first series, anyway," Gentry said. "It's not anything where we'll even take a remote chance."During his Monday evaluation Lopez did not receive an epidural, and doctors said he is progressing well with Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers 43 Troy Polamalu Realtree camo Jersey
his rehab.Phoenix did not struggle in his absence but the improved defense that the Suns experienced after the All-Star break diminished in the past few weeks. After Wednesday night's victory over the Jazz, the playoff picture is officially set. The Suns will play the Portland Trailblazers, a team that Phoenix struggled against during the regular season. The only positive is that Portland might be without star guard Brandon Roy, who is currently deciding whether or not to forgo knee surgery. So what does Lopez's injury mean in the long run for the Suns?Phoenix is simply a better overall team with him the lineup. His size alone makes him a defensive force that can trouble any team's big man. Although he diminishes the range that the Suns have with Channing Frye on the court, Lopez is a very Reebok Green Bay Packers 21 Charles Woodson Realtree camo Jersey
efficient scorer, making nearly 59 percent of his field goal attempts.Frye and Jarron Collins have filled in at Center, while Alvin Gentry has used a combination of players, including Amar'e Stoudemire and Lou Amundson, to give the Suns a different look. Phoenix can afford to lose him for the first round, and quite possibly the second (if they make it that far), but if they want to go deeper than that they will need Lopez to do it.

28 Dec 10 Kobe Bryant Gets Defensive With His Eighth First Team Selection

Kevork Djansezian/Getty ImagesI feel like Los Angeles Lakers' guard Kobe Bryant has been one of the NBA's best man defenders for most of his career. The league obviously echoes my sentiments as Bryant was selected to the all-NBA defensive first team for the eighth time. It's easy to forget Bryant's prowess as a defender considering he is one of the best offensive talents to ever enter the NBA, but his defensive skills have been on full display so far this postseason.Bryant's defense on Oklahoma City point guard Russell Westbrook was likely the difference in that series. Now although Ron Artest now defends an opponent's best player, it was Bryant's responsibility since he became a starter. This is quite an accomplishment for a player who draws most of Reebok San Francisco 49ers #21 Frank GORE Realtree camo Jersey
his reviews, positive or negative, on the offensive end of the court, but the same qualities that make Bryant a superb scorer aid him on the defensive end as well. For one, Bryant is one of the better athletes in the professional game, and the attention he pays to honing his craft is legendary and unmatched.Bryant's ultimate goal is perfection. He understood at an early age that what he did on the defensive end weighs just as much as the offensive end when crafting a legacy.Excelling on the defensive end takes willpower, endurance, pride, and confidence, and Bryant has an abundance of all four.He seems to draw as much satisfaction from a defensive stop as he does from a pretty shot.Bryant is also one of the more fundamentally sound players in the league, and his footwork and close-out ability on the perimeter is known, but greatly under-appreciated.The rigors of 14 professional seasons have began to take their toll on Bryant as evidenced by the numerous ailments he has faced this season. But true to form, Bryant Reebok Washington Redskins #98 ORAKPO Realtree camo Jersey
has been able to adjust his game accordingly.Artest's arrival gave Bryant the opportunity to play the passing lanes more, and it also allowed him to guard a player like Westbrook since Artest was so effective on the Thunder's Kevin Durant. In the past, Bryant would have been forced to defend a player like Durant because former laker Trevor Ariza would have been like a lamb to the slaughter in the face of Durant's offensive assault. But Artest's competent defense meantBryant could concentrate his focus on defending Westbrook, while conserving some of his energy for the offensive end. There are those who would say Bryant is overrated as a defender, but that is not a sentiment which is shared by any of his peers around the league, or any of his opposing coaches.Thunder coach Scott Brooks agreed when asked if Bryant's defense was the factor which swung momentum in their series, and Cleveland Cavaliers' star LeBron James credits Bryant for his own defensive approach.James said he was impressed with Bryant's Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers 43 Troy Polamalu Realtree camo Jersey
abilities as a defender when the two were teammates on the United States' gold medal winning Olympic team.It was Bryant's dedication on that end of the floor, which caused James to re-evaluate his own defense. It worked for James because this year, his one-on-one defensive skills saw a huge improvement and he joined Bryant on the first team, his second selection for that honor.

27 Dec 10 Cavaliers Must Make a Stand

Jim Rogash/Getty ImagesWe are heading in the Summer of LeBron and everyone has an opinion. I want to preface this with the fact that I am a Cleveland Cavaliers fan and am happy to have had LeBron. The problem I have is the fact that LeBron is holding the organization hostage. Danny Ferry has done everything within his power to bring a championship caliber supporting cast. All of these players LeBron has openly campaigned for or at the very least was excited to have. LeBron is a great player, maybe one of the greatest, but he is not Reebok Minnesota Vikings 28 Adrian Peterson Realtree camo Jersey
a great judge of talent. He does not know how to make a championship team. The Cavs are being handcuffed by him. If he stays they must tell him to just do what he does best and play ball. Let the people who were hired to make decisions make those decisions without pressure from him. If he trusts them then he must sign the max 6 year deal. These 3 year deals only pressure the team to make trades and signings for today and not what is best for the team or the future. The Cavs choose to go after older players with high dollar long term deals. Where did this get them?A great regular season team that folds come playoff time. What they could have got is some cap room for this year free agent market. The Cavs were so scared to lose LeBron that they basically let him run the organization. The team is in a constant state of flux. They are always trying to learn to play with each other. Teams like Boston and San Antonio that play together for years are much better come playoff time. There are also reports of bringing John Calipari in Reebok Minnesota Vikings #4 Brett Favre Realtree camo Jersey
a package deal with LeBron. I just hope that does not happen in Cleveland. Calipari had 5 first round picks on Kentucky last year and could not even get to the Final Four. He had a very good run in Memphis, but in very weak conference and never won a title. He coached the Nets to the playoffs his second year in the NBA, as an 8th seed, after going 26-56 the previous year. The very next year he was fired after starting 3-17. The Nets went 13-17 the rest of the lockout shortened season. He is more Rick Pitino than Larry Brown. The Cavs will offer LeBron the 6 year max deal. If he only wants to resign for 3 years then they must let him go. Teams have been winning championships for seven years without LeBron and without him holding Dan Gilbert and Danny Ferry hostage the Cavs can Reebok Minnesota Vikings #69 Jared Allen Realtree camo Jersey
win one as well. Let them do what they do best. Danny Ferry has made moves with little cap room and sacrificing draft picks. Imagine what he could do if he was the one actually choosing which players to go after. One thing for sure though is Dan Gilbert will open his wallet and spend to get a winner.

26 Dec 10 Kobe Bryant Surpasses LeBron James in Six Weeks

Kevork Djansezian/Getty ImagesLeBron James was without a doubt the regular season's Most Valuable Player as he led the Cleveland Cavaliers to the league's best overall record. But everyone should realize, it has "regular season" in front of it for a reason.James is without a doubt a fantastic athlete, who thrives in the open floor and penetrating the lane while showing a fabulously developed jump shot. This is not intended to knock on the greatness that is James for his time will come soon enough. But what James managed to do in six Washington Redskins jersey
months has, once again, failed to pay off in the postseason. Eliminated by the aging Boston Celtics in six games during the Eastern Conference semifinals, James has shown once again the difference between him and the likes of Kobe Bryant. What took James six months to do, Bryant surpassed in merely six weeks. The NBA Playoffs have consistently shown legends are born during them, and Bryant's resume has continued to grow.Bryant was known during the regular season as the league's most deadly player in clutch situations, knocking down several game winners and just as he did last season, Bryant has carried his Los Angeles Lakers back to the NBA Finals. The Lakers are truly a resilient team led by the league's best player. Yes, Bryant is the league's best basketball player. James is league's best athlete by far, but Bryant has the better skill-set, his game reaching all aspects of the basketball spectrum. What James can do, Bryant simply does better. Sure Bryant isn't stacked with triple-doubles, but in all reality he doesn't have to be. He still passes better, dribbles better, shoots better, plays defense better and in reality scores in every way better than James to this point.Bryant has developed the best "rise up" shot in the game, as he rises with ease above any and every defender and drills shot after shot after shot. Bryant may not slam everything through the rim like James, but there have been times when James has missed dunks because he just has to power everything in.Bryant's main intent is Reebok Arizona Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald Realtree camo Jersey
to finish, whether he has to simply lay the ball in, or has the chance to dunk. It doesn't matter to him - he simply wants to score and wants to win. His will to win eerily resembles that of Michael Jordan, so much to the point that many question if he is a better clutch performer than Jordan. But this isn't about comparing Jordan to Bryant, it's about showing that Bryant is still the league's best basketball player.James, being the athlete he is, uses his ability to get to the rimand when that's taken away from himhe will rise up for the jumper. His game resembles that of a baseball pitcher with two strong pitches, the fastball and the changeup. No matter what, his opponent knows what's coming.Bryant, however, resembles the like of a premiere pitcher who can rotate between his change up, fastball, knuckleball and curve ball to the point where you never know what's coming. He makes sure to keep his opponent uncomfortable. With free agency just around the corner for James, he can merely sit and watch as Bryant gets to continue to prove why he's the league's best basketball player. We all know just how much Bryant loves vengeance, and now he gets his shot at the team that took away his chance for his fourth title in 2008, the Lakers hated rival Boston.Kobe Bryant ladies and gentlemen was once quoted saying "Love me or hate me, its one or the other, always has been. Hate my game, my swagger. Hate my fade-away, my hunger. Hate that I'm a veteran, a champion. Hate that, hate it with all your heart. Reebok Baltimore Ravens #5 Joe Flacco Realtree camo Jersey
and hate that I'm loved for the exact same reasons."Bryant has once again shown why people both love and hate him, but in reality it doesn't matter. Denying that he's beyond the league's best basketball player is ignorant, because he'll just continue to prove his critics wrong.

25 Dec 10 Can Kevin Love Realistically Become an All-Star Talent?

Handout/Getty Images14 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists in 29 minutes per game.SBN NBA Power Ranking states: "How impressive has Kevin Love been this year? Here's a list of players under the age of 23 who have posted a single-season PER above 22 and a rebound percentage over 17: Tim Duncan (twice). Chris Bosh. Elton Brand. Terry Cummings. Kevin Love. That's it. And of the five, Love's rebound percentage is by far the highest."His PER for the whole season was above 20, therefore he's in the same conversation or caliber of Miami Dolphins jersey
players with Deron Williams, Andrew Bogut, Josh Smith, Brandon Roy, and Carlos Boozer. At the age of 21, Kevin Love is considered one of the top rebounders in the NBA. The funny thing about it was that he was considered a good rebounder in college, but he's an even better rebounder in the NBA.While Kevin Love only stands at 6'9'', his work and efficiency on both sides of the glass are revered as the very best, as he's not athletic or long. He has mastered the art of hand wrestling, boxing out, and timing. At the age of 20, he had posted total rebounding percentages by season that are ranked in the top 40 in NBA's history. While the likes of Dennis Rodman, Swen Nater, Dwight Howard, and Dikiembe Mutombo have posted in the top 40 multiple times, that puts Kevin Love in elite company for best rebounders in NBA's history. What will Kevin Love average? What will Kevin Love average?14 points, 11 rebounds (current)6.4%15 points, 12 rebounds18.1%16 points, 13 rebounds19.7%17 points, 13 rebounds24.7%18 points, 14 rebounds31.1%Total votes: 421Throughout the season, Kevin Love was put on the bench, but as a starter, he put up numbers that shouldn't go without mention. Please consider: 15 PPG, 13 RPG, 3 APG in 32 MPG.It's safe to assume, with another year under his belt, playing Minnesota Vikings
with team USA, and knowing that he's going to be the bona fide starter at the power forward position, that this year will be where Kevin Love can prove if he is an all-star talent that he believes he is.But is he?With an incredible basketball I.Q and a phenomenal rebounding ability to compliment great outlet passing, Kevin Love is no slouch on the offensive end at all.In my opinion, he won't be able to carry a team on the low block, but he can, in certain situations, create his own shot. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the instinct in his head as of right now, due to his shot always getting blocked in the low post. Because he can shoot mid range shots, and three-point shots, there's potential for Kevin Love to score. But with that, Kevin Love, sadly to say, is bad on the defensive end. He doesn't block any shots and doesn't have the athleticism to guard stretch power forwards in the NBA.But while Love is still very young, his versatility would suggest that he has upside still left, particularly on the defensive end.So the question remains, can Kevin Love become an all-star?I'm not talking about a one- or two-time all-star, but an all-star multiple seasons. Here's the rundown. He can be that type of all-star, but it would take the Minnesota Timberwolves to have won at least 50 games. Kevin Love isn't a legit first option on a championship caliber team. He has the potential to be a No. 2 option, and he's a No. 3 option already at the age of 21.Due to the fact that he's not able to carry a team, and that he's a liability on the defensive New England Patriots jersey
end, Kevin Love can't be an all-star until the Wolves win lost of games because he's a Robin type of player, not a Batman.Still, he's an incredible talent, but he's no Dirk Nowitzki. Don't get me wrong, he still has a lot of upside, but as of right now, he's an all-star talent on the level of those like Al Horford or Chris Kaman (I'd take Love over both). Thanks for reading.

24 Dec 10 When a Wizard Cries Wolf: Gilbert Arenas Learns the Dangers of Faking Injuries

Christian Petersen/Getty ImagesWashington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas was recently fined $50,000 by the team after it was revealed that he faked an injury in order to give teammate Nick Young more playing time.Arenas reportedly claimed that his knee was bothering him, but then later admitted he only said it in an attempt to garner more playing time for Young, a player Arenas felt deserved the extra minutes. At first glance it may seem like an unselfish act by Arenas, but in reality it's just a continuation of the strange mannerisms that has led Denver Broncos jersey
him to this particular point in his career.Arenas is an extremely likable guy and a media favorite, but his charisma and personality should not excuse him for the string of questionable choices he has recently made. The gun incident last season was bad, and the pregame dance where he made light of the incident was worse, but this new episode where Arenas "sacrificed" himself for the sake of the team takes the cake.Young very well may deserve more time on the court, and when he received the opportunity to play Young performed well, but is that really Arenas' decision to make?Last time I checked Flip Saunders was the Wizards' coach, and if he really felt Young deserved more time, then I have no doubts he would give them to him. But, it looks like Young may get his fill of minutes eventually and they will likely come from Arenas, since the Wizards have made it clear they no longer feel his presence is needed. The only problem is, what team in their right mind would trade for him?Call it coincidence or call it irony, but one night after faking an injury Arenas suffered a groin pull that only complicates matters since, those types of injuries usually take longer to recover from. But even if Arenas was healthy and able to play tomorrow he has burned so many bridges in Washington, that few teams would be willing to risk the threat Arenas poses to chemistry.By all accounts Arenas is genuinely a good guy with a goofy persona, and a love for practical jokes, but when you add in his numerous knee injuries, and Detroit Lions
constant clashes with management, he doesn't seem worth the risk.Sadly, it's not even a matter of talent though, because Arenas proved during his brief return last year that he could still get to the rim at will, and he did score over 30 points in his first game back.Arenas is a 22.7 points per game career scorer, but he has only appeared in 465 out of a possible 738 career regular season games, and there is also this to consider. Why would a player whose recent career has been defined by injury choose to tempt fate by crying wolf?Besides creating extremely bad karma, what type of message does it send to teams who may have been willing to take a chance on Arenas' damaged goods? How does anypotential trade partnerknow that this is just an isolated incident from Arenas, and that he has truly learned his lesson? How can a team in good faith take a chance on Arenas, and then have to live with the lingering thought that any minor injury suffered from here on out is not another desperate plea for attention?Because Green Bay Packers jersey
that's all it really boils down to.Arenas has been so limited by injuries the past few seasons that the only way he has remained relevant in the NBA was by giving confusing sound bytes, and committing egregious acts.Arenas may still have a few years of NBA-level play left in his weary body, but unless he learns to close his mouth and focus on the game, we may never get the chance to find out.

23 Dec 10Houston Rockets Fail To Launch: No One Can Defend Team's Ductile Defense

Jeff Gross/Getty ImagesSo much for lift-off.After whipping the Minnesota Timberwolves and reeling off two straight against the Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks, the Houston Rockets crash landed like a shuttle with all of its engines blown out and now must digest a miserable 3-9Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers #86 Hines Ward Realtree camo Jersey
record. Houston surrendered in consecutivebeatdowns and in athree-point homedefeat that mightsting for the rest of the season. The Chicago Bulls, Oklahoma City Thunder and Toronto Raptors could have been mistaken for the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors and Denver Nuggets. The Rockets did not stop anyone on any ofthose squads when it counted. Shannon Brown, Steve Blake, Monta Ellis, Stephen Curry, Al Harrington, Marco Belinelli, Jason Smith, Kyle Korver, Andrea Bargnani and Linas Kleiza have each circled a common futuredate on their calendars in the previous month.None of them can wait to play the Rockets again, so they can light up the scoreboard and look good doing it. Houston, despite crippling injuries and a road-heavy earlyschedule, looks ready for Secaucus. It would be fool-hearted for the team's supporters to give up hope 12 games into an 82-date campaign. Fans believe at all costs because it is their job to do so. Management, however, must know the returns of Aaron Brooks and Yao Ming will not provide a panacea. The front office, headed by GM Daryl Morey, cannot allow the "we'll get better" charades to continue. This team has issues time will not fix. For one, the basketball and football franchisesseem to Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison Realtree camo Jersey
be aligned when it comes tohistoric defensive ineptitude. The Rockets might not allow the equivalent of 400 passing yards per contest, but they have done enough to warrant the criticism that accompanies yielding an average of107 points on 46 percent shooting.Different week, same problem. Maybe the Texans and Rockets can commiserate together. Texans Safety Bernard Pollard, who ranks in the NFL'stop 10 in giving up bigplays that lead to touchdowns, could show Kevin Martin a thing or two about tough talk. No one seems qualified, though,to put that gab into practice, aside from a few usual suspects not talented enough to compensate for the rest of the clueless stiffs.Friday's effort was pathetic, even if the team led at several junctures and was close before the Raptors pulled away late. The Air Canada Centre has become the Rockets' version of Helga's House of Pain. Toronto, now 4-9, brought plenty of it from the start.Tonight, the Phoenix Suns bring a 6-7 record and an offense that can still pour it on, even with Amar'e Stoudemire's defection to New York, to Toyota Center. Agroinstrain will sideline Steve Nash, making reserve spark plug Goran Dragic the probable starter at point guard. Can the Rockets take advantage of some rare good fortune in their favor, or will Dragic become the latest salivating ballerto shred through a defense that might struggle in a senior citizen's league? Hell, 76-year-old Bill Russell could decideto test his skills against Houston if this continues. The man-to-man and team coverage would merit praise if the Rockets could duplicate the efforts at home versus Minnesota and at Madison Square Garden more often. Instead, those lockdown master clinics seem more like aberrations than the start of Reebok San Francisco 49ers #21 Frank GORE Realtree camo Jersey
a trend.Rick Adelman oversees the fifth most productive offense in the association, but the Rockets lack a passable go-to option on that end with Yao and Brooks unavailable. This team couldn't close a Wal-Mart or a coffee shop, much less a quarter in anNBA game.Wednesday night, it was Battier missing a free throw that would have cut the Thunder's halftime lead to seven. Then, it was Scola fouling Russell Westbrook beyond the arcbefore the second quarter buzzer sounded. The Rockets trailed by 11, 64-53, instead of eight.Friday night, Scola delivered the Rockets a brief third-quarter lead, 75-74, then the Raptors proceeded to score four straight baskets. When it comes to closing the deal, this teams squadknowsas much about that art as Steve Carell's character in the 40-Year-Old Virgin. No coach in sports history could win with this slapdash, abominable defense. Few could survive the grind with such a confused, inept crunch-time offense. Two weeks ago, Scola's fast-break layup afforded the Rockets their last fourth quarter lead in Washington, 85-84. The Wizards then mounted a killer 10-0 run with a turnover-pronerookie at the helm and a similarly horrific half-court defense. The excuses maycome flying off the shelves like popular Christmas toys. Tough schedule. The back-to-back champs were too good and experienced on opening night. Too many road contests versus ones at home. The author of the Lakers'game-winning shot was playing in his first ever regular season game in Reebok Washington Redskins #98 ORAKPO Realtree camo Jersey
purple and gold. The sleepy, unfashionably late fans, aside from the dedicatedRed Rowdies, and comical fourth-quarter lapses create a no-advantage atmosphere at Toyota Center. The Rockets have choked away final frame leads in every loss. What makes anyone think the venue matters?GiveHouston's pro basketball team a high school gym for the evening, and they will find a way to lose there, too. Thesquads atop the Western Conference havedealt with hardships, andthe disparityor varying degrees should not tilt the discussion. When the Rockets rolled into the AT&T Center without Kyle Lowryor Yao's services, and then lost Brooks at halftime, they played opposite a Spurs team missing reserve forward/centerMatt Bonner.

MLB Rumors: Reports Say New York Mets Making Progress With Pitcher Chris Young

Christian Petersen/Getty ImagesAccording to ESPN and the New York Post, the New York Mets are deep in talks with hurler Chris Young. While Buster Olney says the Mets are "closing in on a deal" for the 31-year-old former All-Star, the Post is reporting that they are "not close" to signing the lanky right-hander.I can understand Philadelphia Eagles jersey
why some people consider him a relatively cheap short term option; I just don't see too much value in going after him.His price tag is way too high for someone who will enter the season as an almost unknown quantity and the risk outweighs the reward.Nobody knows just how his surgically repaired right shoulder will hold up under the rigors of a 150-inning campaign, and even if he does have a clean bill of health, the fact remains that he's not really been a solid pitcher since 2007.His velocity was down when he did pitch in four games in 2010 and, coupled with a highly restrictive budget, it just doesn't make sense to blow it all on one aging guy who may or may not contribute much in the coming season. The Padres, who paid him $11 million for the last two years, had a pretty simple decision to make in not picking up his hefty $8.5 million option for 2011 and the Mets should give him a wide berth, too.Is Chris Young a good target for the Mets?Is Chris Young a good target for the Mets?Yes63.4%No36.6%Total votes: 232I know the pitching Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
rotation is in a state of flux with Johan Santana starting the year on the DL, but the team has holes all over the place, most notably in the bullpen now that Pedro Feliciano has declined arbitration.Depending on who you believe, the Mets have anywhere from $5 to $10 million in the budget this year. They played a risky—but probably worthwhile—game in their dealings with Feliciano this past week, and they would be advised to pass on Young. In short, Young isn't the same pitcher—injury or not—that posted back-to-back seasons of double-digit wins. His strikeouts have been on the decline since 2007, his command has slowly worsened and hitters are doing a much better job of putting the ball in play. Young doesn't have the stuff to make hitters scared and because of his declining skill set, they can wait on pitches in the zone and drive them hard somewhere. The trend over the last three years that he was healthy is that a) batters are swinging at fewer pitches and b) making better contact with the pitches they do swing it. Young has no deception and no ability to blow guys away. It's all fastball-slider and neither pitch can be considered a "plus" offering any more.Fans tend to remember the 6'10" Young as the San Diego All-Star who San Diego Chargers jersey
consistently tossed low-90s fastballs on the black. The reality is he's a mid-80s guy whose best days are behind him.New York has the luxury of pitching in a pitchers' park, so Young may very well be able to post a sub 3.75 ERA there. With the price and risk, though, it's better to look for cheaper options elsewhere.2011 is not the year to be inheriting risky arms with inflated contracts.

20 Dec 10 Buffalo Bills-Detroit Lions: Why the Lions Will Need Jahvid's Best on Sunday

Gregory Shamus/Getty ImagesDetroit Lions at Buffalo BillsSunday November 14th, 2010 1:00 PM ESTLine: Buffalo -3Overview:At 0-7, the Buffalo Bills have a lot to be down on themselves about. The roster lacks talent in a lot of key areas and fans are certainly growing uneasy. After losing their last three games by three points a piece, it seems like a victory is inevitable. Despite being winless, the Bills are favored in their upcoming matchup against the 2-6 Detroit Lions. The Lions suffered a tough loss last week, virtually giving the Reebok Pittsburg Steelers #83 Heath Miller Realtree camo Jersey
game away to the New York Jets last week. It will be interesting to see how the Lions respond to the tough loss. Both teams have found a way to lose tight games when victory is all but forcing itself onto them. This is certainly not a clash of the titans, but it is intriguing nonetheless.Keys to the Game:Matthew Stafford is out (again). Lions fans all over the world have become all too familiar with Stafford’s lingering shoulder injury. While some may say they forced him back into the lineup too early, the hit that knocked Stafford out of the game had injury written all over it. Even if the Lions would have held him out an extra week, the defender had all of his body weight landing squarely upon Stafford’s shoulder. The injury was unavoidable. If Shaun Hill is able to play on Sunday, he should get the start. If not, it will be up to Drew Stanton to lead the Lions. Stafford’s injury is unfortunate. If he would have stayed in the game, it appears the Lions would have been able to obtain a key victory over the Jets.Steve Johnson is the one player on the Bills that poses a threat to the Lions. Johnson posted 158 yards against the Baltimore Ravens and 145 yards against the Bears last week. The Lions can’t allow Johnson to get loose. He has the potential to take over a game by himself and if Ryan Fitzpatrick can create time with his feet, Johnson has lethal moves that allow him to create space down the field. Johnson is only 24 and looks like he will have a promising future in the NFL. Roscoe Parrish was put on the IR after breaking his wrist last week, but I don’t see that having a direct impact on Johnson’s production. The Bills are the worst team defensively against the run, which will not bode well for them this week. Rookie Jahvid Best has struggled in comparison to his explosion onto the NFL scene in the first two weeks. While a 100 yard game has escaped him thus far in his brief NFL career, this could be the week that Best has a huge statistical run game. Best can run with anyone in the NFL and the Bills lack speed on defense. They can attempt to contain Best, but they have suffered serious problems all year long. The Lions should be Reebok Arizona Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald Realtree camo Jersey
able to gash the Bills and Best will need to have a big game in the absence of his starting quarterback.CJ Spiller hasn’t been fed more than seven carries a game. What gives? The Bills selected him with their first round pick because they valued his play making ability. He plays a key role on special teams, but Spiller could easily be the most talented player on the Bills roster. They haven’t won a game and Fred Jackson isn’t having a spectacular year, so why not give Spiller more touches. Spiller was my pick for offensive rookie of the year. While that award may be unobtainable for him at this point, the Bills are not showing they have any confidence in him at all. This might be a dead season, but the Bills have a dynamic asset on their hands and nothing to lose. He needs to get at least 15 touches a game and this is the perfect week to up his carries, despite his struggles.Ndamukong Suh is one of the most exciting players to watch in the NFL. In his rookie campaign, Suh has posted 6.5 sacks, an interception, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Suh has a rare combination of raw power, size, and athleticism that makes him impossible to block. The former Heisman finalist might go down as the worst field goal kicker in NFL history, but he can take over an entire game at the defensive tackle position. It is astounding what he has been able to accomplish. The Lions already have an offense that can compete. A few more pieces on defense to surround Suh and the Lions could make noise in the NFC North.Calvin Johnson isn’t going to be on Revis island this week. Johnson will likely pick up right where he left off and have another monster game. While Johnson does not have Stafford throwing him the ball, he has been successful regardless of who is throwing him the ball. The Bills like to give Jairus Byrd the freedom to roam around and make plays all over the field, but Johnson is going to command his attention the entire game. The Bills are already terrible against the run. Overcompensating for the run is unlikely to make a huge difference and is going to allow Johnson to break loose. The Bills need to at least try to contain Johnson, or they will watch him post a 150 yard game.Who covers on Sunday?Who covers on Sunday?Bills10.6%Lions89.4%Total votes: 302Wrap Up:The Bills are not going to go 0-16. The Lions might have some glaring holes on their roster, but they are also have players that can absolutely dominate. The Bills have remained competitive, but these tight losses have to be waring on team morale. Bad teams find a way to lose and for the 8th straight week this season, you can expect to see an L in the Bills win column.Free NFL Pick: Detroit Lions +3

19 Dec 10 Kansas City Chiefs Coach Todd Haley Should Never Have Apologized

Justin Edmonds/Getty ImagesFirst, I think his apology was weak and insincere to begin with. If so, you're better off not bothering.More to the point, however, I don't believe Todd Haley has anything to apologize for. It's nothing more than a hypocritical PR issue.Let me make this very clear. I am of Reebok Arizona Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald Realtree camo Jersey
the mindset, along with many others that believe if you don't want the score to get out of hand, then stop them. This is professional sports. In college football there is actually a reason to run the score up, and they do a fine job of it week in and week out. Just one more thing that is wrong with that system, but I digress.Next, we do not know what exactly Haley was so angry about. We can speculate, as the media has.I have heard everything from keeping starters in late, to the players excess celebration to a cheap shot on Tony Moeaki on an onside kick late in the game. That, and issues unrelated to the game.If those thingspreviously listed are considered "professionalism" and "sportsmanship," but not shaking a hand at the end of the gamethe opposite. That is where the hypocrisy comes in.You can call it undignified, ungracious, not taking the high road or any number of other things and theywould all be fair points. This nonsense about how it's OK for players, or coaches to behave in many unsportsmanlike ways during the game, Reebok Baltimore Ravens #5 Joe Flacco Realtree camo Jersey

Knock them around, beat the hell out of them, run the score up, stop them if you don't like it, but then if you don't make nice nice at the end?Coach Haley is known for having a temper. Often, that is the flip side to passion. It's a passionate game. He's also becoming a great coach. In one year he has matured a great deal and been humbled in many ways.Part of the reason this is such a big story is a very astute photographer got a phenomenal, well timed picture.Well, it's not really a story, exceptin our 24-hour media circus.Someone on one of the comments here made a very valid point. He should have taken the high road, waited a few weeks and returned the favor at Arrowhead Stadium. Very fair point.I suspect that is still in his game plan.I'm Reebok Baltimore Ravens #27 Ray Rice Realtree camo Jersey
glad Haley is the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. Conversely, I'm glad Josh McDaniel's is head coach of the Denver Broncos. In the end, that will be a major benefit to the Chiefs.Haley will be the head coach in Kansas City long after McDaniel's is back being an assistant somewhere, as he should.

18 Dec 10 Atlanta Falcons vs. St. Louis Rams: Falcons Go for Fourth Straight Win

Kevin C. Cox/Getty ImagesThe Atlanta Falcons are coming off a huge, emotional win over the Baltimore Ravens and have a Week 12 matchup against the Green Bay Packers, a trendy Super Bowl pick entering the season. The St. Louis Rams are a young team with a lot to prove, who just had a tough overtime Reebok Minnesota Vikings #4 Brett Favre Realtree camo Jersey
loss to the San Francisco 49ers.This is the definition of a trap game. The Rams have a surprisingly strong defense this year, currently at sixth in the NFL, giving up just 18.2 points per game. Their average of 97.8 opponent rushing yards per game is also sixth in the league.Like the Falcons, their numbers against the pass aren't great, but it's points that matter. Matt Ryan and Roddy White will surely look to take advantage of their suspect pass defense, however.Unlike Atlanta, St. Louis' offense has struggled mightily and has had trouble with turnovers. The Falcons' offense is in the top-10 in total yards per game, rushing yards per game and points per game. Its 19 takeaways and plus-nine turnover differential also place near the top.The Rams are near the bottom in yards per game, passing yards per game and points per game, and are mediocre in terms of rushing yards. They are just plus-three in turnover differential and the offense has 12 giveaways.Who will win this game?Who will win this game?Atlanta Falcons78.5%St. Louis Rams21.5%Total votes: 251St. Louis will have the advantage of playing at home, but the game is still being played in a dome. Rams are in a similar situation to how the Falcons were in 2008, breaking in a rookie quarterback in Sam Bradford.Bradford has played well this year, completing 60 percent of his passes and throwing 12 touchdowns. St. Louis has had the misfortune, though, of having its receiver corps decimated by injuries. The Rams still have a very good running back in Steven Jackson. He is good running the ball and is skilled as a receiver. He is a threat to break the type of big play that has haunted Atlanta at times this year.On a better team, Jackson would be putting up some monster statistics, similar to those earlier in his career, and the Falcons will need to contain him.In all likelihood, the Rams will need to play one of their best games of the season to beat Atlanta. The Falcons will need to Reebok New England Patriots #12 Tom Brady Realtree camo Jersey
avoid a letdown, like the one they almost had against San Francisco in Week 4 after beating New Orleans a week earlier. They surely learned a lesson from that experience and will be favored in this game. However, as the saying goes, anything can happen on any given Sunday.Atlanta will need to be focused to win four straight for the second time this year and prevent disappointment.

Saints QB Drew Brees finally has the Saints offense clicking on all cylinders in 2010. The intangibles seem to favor the Dallas Cowboys.

Saints will have little time to implement what they've learned about those Cowboys on the practice field.
And, Dallas seems to have new life in the past two weeks under former Saints QB and new interim head coach Jason Garrett.
However as FOX analyst and former Baltimore Ravens boss Brian Billick said Wednesday morning on ESPN Radio, these New Orleans Saints are starting to look scary and that is without Reggie Bush, Pierre Thomas, Jeremy Shockey and Darren Sharper in the line-up.
Imagine how good they will be when all four are back to good health.
Reggie's 4-6 week injury has somehow turned into eight weeks but it would be a major disappointment if he does not play this week.
Pierre Thomas is a mystery as his ailment keeps lingering.
Shockey is on the road to being rendered dispensable the way rookie Jimmy Graham is playing of late.
While, the Saints need Sharper back ASAP for his ability to make plays on the ball.
Saints QB Drew Brees told WWL Reebok New York Giants #27 Brandon Jacobs Realtree camo Jersey
Radio's Bobby Hebert on Tuesdaynight that falling behind the Cowboys 24-3 in the fourth quarter last year put his offensive tackles in an impossible situation.
"Obviously those (Cowboys) defensive linemenpinned their ears back and rushed the passer and that can be pretty difficult on our offensive tackle(Jermon Bushrod) because you're out there on an island with one of the best pass rushers in the league in DeMarcus Ware," said Brees.
Brees says the Saints appreciate just how gifted a player Ware is and have installed special protection packages for both base and nickel coverages.
In spite of Dallas' disappointing season, Ware still has 8 1/2 sacks and 7 tackles for losses and the Cowboyshave no shortage of guys who can rush the passer including Anthony Spencer and Jay Ratliff.
Ware and Spencer wreaked havoc on the Saints one year ago on a Saturday night in New Orleans. It was Saints first loss of the year on the way to the Super Bowl.
"It's really about being good on first and second down and not getting yourself in third-and-long situations," said Brees on WWL Tuesday night. "You don't want to get into obvious pass downs and have those guys pin their ears back,. It's a matter of being balanced, running the football and possessing the ball as much as we can."
NFL veteran Jon Kitna has replaced the injured Tony Romo at quarterback and has been just what the doctor ordered in the past two weeks for the Cowboys according to NFL scout Chris Landry.
Landry told Hebert Wednesday night, "I think Reebok New York Jets #6 Mark Sanchez Realtree camo Jersey
Kitna is the ideal backup quarterback. He is experienced. He's smart. He doesn't need a lot of repetitions to be able to jump in there and finish a game or takeover for a stretch which he's been asked to do with Romo being out."
"They're more efficient and more disciplined and more organized as a team the past couple of weeks and Kitna is the perfect example of that," said Landry.
"He really manges a game well. He keeps them out of harm's way. They stay on schedule offensively. They've been able to make enough big plays. And they've not made the killer mistake and that has allowed (the Cowboys) to win some games."

San Diego Chargers and Philip Rivers Are Ready To Run the Wild, Wild AFC West

The Chargers started the season slow, appearing dead set to miss the playoffs.
Fumbling woes, special teams miscues and injuries created a gaping hole in the Chargers’ once-dominant ship among the rowboats of the AFC West division.
The Chargers special teams cost them two of their first five games of the season, dropping them to 2-3.
Leon Washington ran back two kick returns for Steelers 10 Santonio Holmes jersey
touchdowns, a Seahawks franchise record, to give Seattle the 27-20 home win.
The Chargers then lost on the road two weeks later to the Raiders, who blocked one punt for a safety and another for a touchdown in the first quarter alone. Rivers fumbled late in the fourth quarter, allowing Oakland to recover for a touchdown.
With two home wins and three road losses, it was evident the Chargers were not just mediocre at home, but unable to win on the road.
The Chargers headed into their Week 10 bye 4-5 and .500 in their last four games. They won two tough games against the Titans and Texans leading up to the bye, though. That gave them a lot of momentum, as they were back in the running for the AFC West division crown.
Although they carried the momentum of a two-game win streak into the bye, the Chargers were decimated by injuries. Starting wide receivers Legedu Naanee and Malcom Floyd were out with hamstring injuries. Rookie running back Ryan Mathews has battled head and ankle injuries this season. Hall of Fame tight end Antonio Gates was forced to sit for the first time in four seasons with a foot injury. Vincent Jackson was still ineligible to play.
Luckily for the Chargers, Philip Rivers has been in rare, MVP caliber form. Rivers has been almost unstoppable this season. Rivers won two games against tough AFC South opponents with backups Mike Tolbert, Randy McMichael and Seyi Ajirotutu.
The Chargers finally got back to .500 following the bye week.
With the extra time to prepare, San Diego destroyed Josh McDaniels’ Broncos 35-14 on Monday Night football. Rivers tossed four touchdown passes in the game. Malcom Floyd returned from injury to catch a touchdown pass. Unfortunately, Patrick Crayton injured his wrist, requiring surgery.
Despite the ongoing injuries, the Chargers were back at .500 and on pace to make a run at the division title. Perhaps just as important, they were getting back their “star” wide receiver, Vincent Jackson, for the Week 12 Sunday Night showdown against the Indianapolis Colts.
The Colts, who had just lost to their rivals New England on the road, were at home and irate. This appeared to spell another loss for the Chargers.
Instead, the three-point underdogs went into Indianapolis and once again dominated the Colts. The Chargers brought reinforcements, with Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson.
In the first quarter of his 2010 debut, Vincent Jackson injured his calf and was done for the night. Thanks for playing, V-Jax.
The Chargers defense held down the fort while Philip Rivers failed to throw a touchdown pass or for 200 yards in the contest. Still, Rivers only threw four incomplete passes, and the Chargers refused to turn the ball over. Instead, the San Diego defense created five turnovers of Vikings Brett Favre jersey
their own. Colts fourth-string running back Javarris James fumbled the ball, and Donald Brown rushed 11 times for 24 yards.
Peyton Manning threw two touchdown passes in the first half, which sounds good on paper, but he also threw two touchdown passes to Chargers defenders. In the first quarter, Kevin Burnett picked off Manning and ran it back 29 yards for a touchdown. The Chargers went up 10-7 and never looked back.
In the second half, Eric Weddle picked off Manning and ran it back for a 41-yard touchdown. In all, Manning threw four interceptions in the game and has tossed seven in the past two games. The Chargers have the Colts’ number, and it seems no matter who is on the field for San Diego, they’re going to come out on top.
The Chargers are finally getting healthy and are now on a four-game win streak. With two division matchups coming up against Oakland and Kansas City at home as part of a three-week home stand, the Chargers are in prime position to take control of this wild AFC West race.
The Chargers always seem to start slow and finish strong, and this year appears to be no different. The defense is clicking, creating pressure and turnovers. The running game with Mike Tolbert is solid, playing off the impeccable passing of Philip Rivers. If Rivers can carry his oft-injured team into the playoffs, he may very well be the MVP of the league. He currently has thrown for 3,362 yards, 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
The Kansas City Chiefs still stand in the Chargers' way of repeating as AFC West division winners. The Chiefs have been hot as of late, especially Dwayne Bowe, who has turned into an unstoppable superstar overnight, with 14 touchdown receptions this season.
The young Chiefs team boasts one of the best coaching staffs in the league, with head coach Todd Haley, offensive coordinator Charlie Weis and defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel. The Chiefs are a resilient team and should beat the Broncos at home to avenge their embarrassing loss two weeks ago.
With both Kansas City and San Diego 4 Brett Favre White jersey
expected to win Week 13, their Week 14 matchup becomes one of the most important games of the season.
Amidst the turmoil in the beginning of the season, Philip Rivers has carried this team on his shoulders. He has his team in legit position to end the season on a nine-game win streak to finish with an 11-5 record and another AFC West division crown.

New England Patriots vs. New York Jets: Stopping Mark Sanchez Key for Patriots

Al Bello/Getty ImagesTurning skeptics into believers. That's been the name of the game for the New York Jets this season, specifically Mark Sanchez, who entered the season with serious doubts about his ability to lead a team as a franchise-caliber quarterback. He may not have reached elite Cowboys jersey
status just yet, but he's well on his way.Bill Belichick notices the growth, too."He's showed a lot of poise this year late in games," said Belichick. "He's done a good job of managing games, making big plays when he has to (and) taking good care of the ball."More and more each week, we're seeing Brian Schottenheimer loosen the leash that's had Sanchez playing a ball control-style of offense. Less and less, we're seeing that the Jets need to run the ball on first, second and third down to win games. The Jets have rushed for over 100 yards in two of their losses, so it's clear that running doesn't necessarily correlate to winning for them the way it did in 2009.In fact, in three of the past four Jets games, we've seen Sanchez command a game-winning drive. The wins may not be impressive, but Sanchez's play in the clutch certainly has been.Last season, the name of the game was to shut down the Jets rush attack and hope for Mark Sanchez to make mistakes.Who is the most important player for the Patriots to shut down if nfl throwback jerseys

The Steelers Could Clinch a Playoff Berth With a Win Over the Bengals

Geoff Burke/Getty ImagesAfter a gutsy performance to defeat the Baltimore Ravens Sunday night, the Steelers have taken control of their own destiny, sitting atop the AFC North division and possibly a No. 2 seed in the playoffs. The Steelers may be over the hump, but are not out of the woods yet. There is Vikings jersey
a quarter of the season left to go, and the Steelers still have some challenges ahead.Sunday, the (9-3) Steelers play the second of a regular season division opponent, the woeful (2-10) Cincinnati Bengals, and can clinch a playoff berth this week with a win.The Bengals are trying to end a nine-game losing streak. They could assume the role of spoiler from here on out, starting this week with Pittsburgh, who they nearly knocked off a few weeks ago.Last year’s AFC North champions are currently on a nine-game losing streak since beginning the season 2-1.When these two teams met for the first time this season, the Steelers defeated the Bengals 27-21 on the road, after they came close to giving up the 20-point lead.QB Carson Palmer orchestrated a comeback in the fourth, and on two major defensive penalties capitalized for 14 points. (Lamar Woodley called for tripping, Ike Taylor called twicefor defensive pass interference and Casey for Hampton-roughing the passer). Matthew Stockman/Getty ImagesOn Cincinnati’s final play, the game came down to the ability of linebacker James Harrison and cornerback Ike Taylor to knock the ball away from Cincinnati slot receiver Jordan Shipley on a fourth-and-five play at the nfl jerseys
Steelers 12-yard line to help seal the victory. On a three-game win streak, the Steeler defense has returned true to form giving up only 29 points while allowing opponents an average 260 total yards. In their previous three games they gave up 80 points in losses to New Orleans and New England. The Steelers haven't allowed a 100-yard rusher in 46 consecutive games. In the last meeting, RB Cedric Benson ran 11 times for 46 yards in the first half against the Steelers and was shut down in the second.Benson has only two 100-yard games this season—against Buffalo and Tampa Bay—and averages 3.5 yards per carry. Bernard Scott, the other running back, averages 4.5 yards per carry. However, the last time he faced the Steelers in Week 9, he received no carries and lost a fumble. The Steelers are still No. 1 against the run and are allowing three yards per carry and a mere 62.2 yards per game. I expect the streak to continue. However, the Bengals defense is 22nd against the run, hopefully we can expect a healthy dose of RB Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac “Red Zone” Redmond.Matthew Stockman/Getty ImagesHosting the Bengals at Heinz Field this Sunday, it is expected to snow which is all the more reason to pass the rock to our running backs. The Bengals offense ranks better than the Steeler offense which is all the more reason for the defense, especially the secondary, to stay on its toes.It has been reported that DE Brett Keisel will be back in the line up this Sunday. It has been with his and Aaron Smith’s absence due to injury which has weakened the pass rush.A little history note: This is the 81st meeting for the Steelers and the Bengals. The Steelers lead series, 48-32, with Steelers jersey
a 26-14 record in Pittsburgh. The Steelers won the first meeting in Cincinnati 27-21 Nov. 8, after the Bengals swept the series last season for the first time since 1998.The Steelers had won the five games previous to that. The series began in 1970 when the Steelers joined the AFC and the two have shared the same division, Central and North, since.

Pittsburgh Steelers "Former NFL player Haselrig wins MMA bout"

Former Steelers All-Pro offensive guard Carlton Haselrig defeated Carlos Moreno via TKO when Moreno was no longer able to continue after Round 1 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. on Saturday.Commentary: Haselrig is the only collegiate wrestler to ever win six NCAA 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey

San Francisco 49ers "Learning to Win" Commentary

Let's get one thing straight. Even though the San Francisco 49ers beat the Minnesota Vikings last weekend, the talent level of the team has not improved. That much is clear when you watch tape of the game. A few personnel changes did make a difference in last week's game, but at the end of the day, the Niners still have holes on both sides of the ball, though those weaknesses may have shifted with the different depth chart. So what accounts for the win? In one word, "confidence". The team managed to keep pace with the Vikings in the early stages of 4 Brett Favre White jersey
the game, something it hasn't done in most of its battles this season. As the clock ticked down, the 49ers began to realize that they could not only "play" with the Vikings, they could win, too.As the 49ers' confidence in themselves grew, they began making a few key plays. The team played harder and executed with precision, all the while tasting victory. So it wasn't a change in talent level, it wasn't brilliant coaching - it was simply doing the little things needed to earn a victory. And though this was not the first win of the season, it may have been the first time Mike Nolan's club elevated its play in this way.The Vikings had something to do with the victory, too. Dropped passes, mistakes and other miscues gave San Francisco an opportunity to win, but all of those things had happened in prior contests. What set this game apart was the 49ers taking their play up a notch - and it paid off. As the team prepares for the Lions game this weekend, it needs to ride this momentum, and channel the confidence from its last victory toward beating 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey
the Lions.Learning how to win in the NFL is a tall task for losing teams. San Francisco took a large leap up the learning curve with last Sunday's victory. Taking that lesson on the road to Detroit, and applying it, would show great progress for Nolan's club, and could restore belief in the players that they can get the job done. All the latest 49ers news, gameday chat, and resources- you can also contact Bryan Hersh from there.

San Francisco 49ers "Uphill road for the Niners bandwagon"

It's official. The 49ers' bandwagon is full. But San Francisco fans had better buckle up and brace for a possible crash. An aggressive offseason by the 49ers has fans giddy about the possibility of building on a 7-9 record from 2006 and returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2002. But they Vikings Brett Favre jersey
might just be putting the horse before the bandwagon because teams don't qualify for the postseason in the offseason.Sure, recent history agrees that the 49ers have as good a chance as any team of making the jump from sub-.500 to the playoffs. Over the past four seasons, 13 teams have made one-year transitions from .500 or worse to 10 wins or more and a playoff spot. The New York Jets made such a leap twice in that span. But plenty of other teams - the 49ers included - have not gotten over that hump. And if the 49ers are finally going to remove themselves from their five-year morass, they will need to have a lot of things come together - new coordinators on both sides of the ball, five new starters on defense, two new receivers and a young quarterback who has started just 23 games. That's a combination that none of the other recent high-jumping teams have had to put together all in the same offseason. And it's the reason the Niners probably won't make the playoffs in 2007.Although they improved from 4-12 in 2005 to 7-9 last season, the 49ers were just 4-4 at home and did not finish well, losing four of their last six games. Also, according to research done by Pro Football Reference, they were the least competitive 7-9 team in league history, with a point differential of minus-114. That means the 49ers will need to make vast improvement both in points scored (they ranked 24th in 2006) and allowed (32nd) if they are to bump their record in 2007.Even though San Francisco has statistically the third easiest schedule in the league, it actually has a rather tough road to get to the playoffs; if the defense doesn't come together quickly and quarterback Alex Smith doesn't improve significantly, the 49ers could be staring at another 7-9 record. Yes, three of their first five games are at home. But all three of those home contests are tough: Arizona swept the 49ers in 2006, Seattle has won six of the past eight meetings, and Baltimore went 13-3 in 2006. And the road games are in St. Louis 4 Brett Favre White jersey
and Pittsburgh. The 49ers probably won't win more than two of those first five. After the 49ers' bye in Week 6, five of the next seven are on the road - at the New York Giants, Atlanta, Seattle, Arizona and Carolina - and the two home games are against new NFC powerhouse New Orleans and division foe St. Louis. That's not an easy slate, and the 49ers' fate will be sealed during that seven-game stretch. Unless everything comes together, the Niners will be fortunate to win three of those seven games (probably the ones against the Rams, Giants and Falcons), which would put them at 5-7 heading into the final four games. The first three of those are at home, and the finale is in Cleveland. So it is quite feasible that the 49ers will finish 3-1. But, in this projection, that would give them an 8-8 record. And that wouldn't be enough. Even if the 49ers can put it all together and win 10 games, there is no guarantee they will be back in 2008. All the Niners have to do is look at the four teams that made big jumps from 2004 to 2005 and then backslid in 2006: Cincinnati went from 8-8 to 11-5 to 8-8 again; Tampa Bay jumped from 5-11 to 11-5 and then fell back to 4-12; Carolina bounced back from an injury-induced 7-9 record in 2004 to go 11-5 in 2005 and then dropped to 8-8 last year; and Washington went from 6-10 to 10-6 to 5-11. The 49ers probably won't fall prey to the roller-coaster rides those teams have taken because the Niners seem to be steadily building. But just because they were aggressive Vikings Brett Favre jersey
during the offseason does not mean they will be able to put it all together and keep the bandwagon rolling this year.Got an idea or a topic that you would like to see explored? Tell us all about it by e-mailing us at feedback . Keep track of the San Francisco 49ers and the rest of the NFL

Peyton Manning "Da-DA-DA-DUM!" Commentary

Da-da-da-DUM!That's the most famous musical riff of all-time, four notes from Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, said to represent bony-knuckled fate knocking at the door, inevitably, finally. Put aside the Metallica used in compiling highlight clips of big hits from linebackers, the gangsta music which backdrops wide Steelers 43 Polamalu jersey
receiver-loving video.Ol' Ludwig's piece will serve as the soundtrack of the week this week, because after Sunday's AFC Championship game, a.k.a. New England Patriots- III, our perception of the NFL will be irrevocably changed. At center stage are the two QBs whose careers have been intertwined since the younger got his shot at starting.First, there's Peyton Manning.(Here's to hoping for his personal psychological welfare that Manning doesn't actually hear Beethoven's Fifth at any point during his much ballyhooed three-day vacation. He'll never get it out of his head.)The burden of fate has weighed heavily on Manning, superstar QB son of a superstar QB. "He can't win the big one," whisper fate's proxies and an echo haunts him in media coverage: "Marino, Marino..." To be fair, the statmaster quarterback is also a media-lapper, loving the attention at least as much as Terrell Owens and seemingly getting more endorsement deals than the rest of the league combined. An oft-repeated cliché in the media-conscious world is "There is no so thing as bad publicity." (Unless your name is O.J. Simpson.) Manning is now finding that media hype is a double-edged sword and that he, Hamlet-like, may be impaled upon it.Forget, if you can through the inevitable barrage, the numbers, because this game is bigger than numbers. The porous Colts run defense, one of the weakest supporting casts Manning has taken into the playoffs, team records, Indy upending the New Englanders 27-20 in Week 9 - it's all out the window. Today, here at RealFootball365, the final word on all the hype. (And it's only Wednesday!)If the Colts win, Manning has loosed himself of one back monkey while coming both literally and figuratively one step closer to clutching the Lombardi Trophy. "Figuratively" is used here because, should the Colts advance to the Super Bowl and lose, at least public perception will still figure Peyton and the Horseshoes to be Bowl contenders. If the Colts lose, Manning's record is forever stained. Indy could romp through the season all the way to beat up, say, the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLII, but trailing an asterisk would read the epitaph, "But he won without going through the Patriots."Da-da-da-DAH!Amidst the overuse of hyperbole from the massive mass of Steelers 43 Polamalu jersey
mass media, rarely do we get such a clear picture of a history-defining moment. Perhaps not since Super Bowl XXVIII (Dallas Cowboys 30, Buffalo Bills 13) has fate, the true 12th man, loomed so largely.Da-da-da-DAH!The knock comes again, and Manning's sole consolation is that counterpart Tom Brady, too, must answer an equally heavy summons.Bringing the classics and the instant classics to life

Defense 48 Turnovers?

Recently, head coach Tony Dungy announced to the media that he would like his team to get 48 turnovers this season. This statement came on the heels of a stern preseason defeat of the New Orleans Saints on Aug. 27 -- a game highlighted by five Colts takeaways. To get that many footballs bouncing their way over the course of Jets 6 Sanchez AFL50th jersey
the season, the Colts would have to average three turnovers a game. Last year they had 31. So Dungy's hoping for an improvement of 17 takeaways (or roughly one extra per game).Certainly if anyone can do it, it might be this year's Indianapolis squad. It has a still-improving, young defense built on speed, and the team's potent offense puts it in the lead early and often, making opponents call more risky plays in order to keep pace on the scoreboard. Last year's leading team in takeaways was another high-scoring one -- the Cincinnati Bengals, who had 44. Second was the Carolina Panthers with 42.But with only a few days before their first game versus the New York Giants, the Colts are nursing several defensive starters. Tackle Corey Simon, strong safety Mike Doss, linebacker Freddie Keiaho and cornerback Nick Harper were unable to practice early in the week. A goal as lofty as 48 turnovers will take not only lots of skill but also luck, the kind of luck that keeps the Colts' defensive players out of the trainer's room. In 2002, Dungy's first year as head coach, the Colts totaled 27 takeaways (an average of 1.7 per game). In 2003 they had 29 (1.8 per game); in 2004 they had 36 (2.2 per game), and last year 31 (an average of 1.9). So they've improved steadily over a four-year period. The bottom line on attaining the head coach's lofty goal is this: The Colts would need to be significantly more aggressive on defense and take more chances. Given their high-scoring offense, Dungy could afford to do just that.At times last year he played things 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
more conservatively than in 2004 (the year their offense went wild) -- and with great success. No one can argue a final regular season record of 14-2. It will be interesting, however, to see if Dungy lets his defensive stars loose this season in order to generate more turnovers. If he does, Indianapolis' defensive players may be grabbing more headlines than Peyton Manning in the weeks ahead

Previewing the 2008 fantasy football Raiders

Not that we’re obsessed with fantasy football here at , but come on, man, our in-house draft is about two weeks away. Time to pore over those players, roster by roster, seeking gems to brighten up your perpetual .500-level club. (OK, OK, my perpetual .500-level club.)Today, it’s the ’ 53 under the microscope in preparation of 4 Brett Favre White jersey
the draft board. Without (much) further ado, then, who in the silver and black is worth a spot on your roster in 2008?(Note: Fantasy points are deriving from the system used by the in-house league's host, including one point for 25 yards passing; one point for 10 yards receiving/rushing; six points for a touchdown passed/run/caught; minus-2 points for fumble/interception. On defense, it’s:? a defensive TD is worth six points, safeties are good for two;? interceptions and recovered fumbles, two points each;? sacks, one point per;? zero to six points scored against equals eight fantasy points; seven to 13, six; 14 to 20, four; 21 to 27, two points; and? zero to 49 yards allowed equals 12 fantasy points, 50 to 99, 10; 100 to 149, eight; 150 to 199, six; 200 to 249, four; and 250 to 299 is worth two.)JaMarcus Russell, also known as the most difficult decision for owners in keeper leagues. Unless playing in an option-keeper league -- i.e., a league which allows the signing of players to multiyear contracts -- most owners will be forced to think long and hard about Russell in 2008. While Russell is guaranteed the No. 1 position on the Raiders, the security of his well-being is far from such behind this offensive line. Sure, Russell can run and may even gain a few fantasy points for his owners this way, too, but his receiving corps doesn’t exactly inspire confidence vis-à-vis actually catching the ball. Russell could end up in the top half of the NFL’s fantasy quarterbacks come year's end and will certainly run up fantasy points against two porous AFC West passing defenses, but would any fantasy owner in his or her right mind really sleep well starting Russell in Week 3 against the improved Buffalo Bills defense? Or in Week 4 versus the Chargers? Or in Week 6 at New Orleans?Recommendation: Russell is a decent bet for second-string QB in any league, particularly for the season’s second half. In option-keeper leagues, draft him and sign him to a five-year deal. After all, he is the future.Darren McFadden/Justin Fargas. When reviewing the top running backs for the 2008 draft, this writer was high enough on McFadden to put him in the top half-dozen or so; in keeper leagues, this still goes. However, it appears that as camp progresses McFadden and Fargas will share touches.Fargas was, of course, a boon to those who picked him up quickly enough last season -- sort of. Indeed, Fargas was the bandwagon pick after his 179-yard game against the Dolphins in Week 4. However, the next three weeks saw him amass just 26, 20 and 97 total yards and no TDs -- just 13 fantasy points against the 17 he managed in his breakout game. Patience was rewarded, though, as Fargas went for an average of 11.8 points per game the rest of the way before ending the season with two DNPs. Recommendation: Can you say “handcuff”? The 2008 Raiders could well be running the very picture of the in-vogue two-back system while gaining lots of ground yardage. Those holding Fargas really shouldn't look anywhere else.Any receiver. With all of his offseason troubles, there’s no way anyone will be happy with a Javon Walker pickup. And while the Raiders’ leading receiver of the past two seasons, Ronald Curry, should surely improve on his none-too-impressive fantasy stats (5.98 points per game in 2007, 4.9 in 2006) with a competent quarterback at the helm, truth is that he’d have to double his best numbers to make a dent in these days of WRs racking up points. Can you see Curry going for 1,400 yards and eight TDs? Me neither.Recommendation: No. (Unless you’re a big Johnnie Lee Higgins fan, that is …)Zach Miller. Aside from maybe Wes Welker, few AFC players were as disproportionately dissed in the fantasy game in relation to their importance to the team: That fact was paid for by the mighty fighting Os Holes, who drafted late in the TE round and wound up with the Raiders’ steadiest player. Miller was easily Oakland’s rookie of the year in 2007 and was at times the best blocker on the whole offensive line; unfortunately, while Fargas has much to thank the ex-Arizona State standout for, we all know that fantasy football just doesn’t award blocks. On the other hand, Miller will certainly improve in all key stats (44 receptions, 444 yards, three TDs, 5.25 fantasy points per game) thanks to, again, a competent quarterback) and just three more fantasy points per game – equaling about 300 more yards and three more touchdowns – would put Miller close to the top-tier TEs in the NFL. (Antonio Gates, No. 2 overall at the position in 2007, contributed 9.5 per game.) Will Miller get this many more catches? With this bunch at receiver? You bet.Recommendation: Miller’s set for a big year; take him as high as No. 5, after the big boys Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Kellen Winslow II and Jeremy Shockey. The defense. Why not? Though stunningly bad against the run in giving up nearly 130 yards rushing per game – the league’s second worst – the unit’s stats versus the pass nearly made up for it last season. The Raiders’ 18 picks and 27 sacks were worth four points per game alone, a decent start for any fantasy ‘D’. Killing, though, were the 24.8 points allowed and that awful, awful run defense. This year is even murkier around the league – truth is, no one defensive unit really stands out at all – and there’s little to believe that the run ‘D’ will be much better with so few improvements made there in terms of Jets 6 Sanchez Jersey
personnel acquisition. Meanwhile, the additions of DeAngelo Hall, Gibril Wilson and, to a lesser extent, Greg Wesley to Nnamdi Asomugha and Michael Huff may well equal the league-leading team in interceptions this season. As to whether it’s enough, well, things can only get better against the run.Recommendation: Potentially even a starting ‘D’ in deep leagues, the best use of the Raider defense would probably be in a heavy rotation, with Oakland coming in against exploitable pass-happy offenses. Who will be the center of attention?

There’s no dispute in Napa, Calif., over who will be the second Oakland Raider to touch the football on offense this season. That’s -- pending a bona fide catastrophe -- 22-year-old quarterback JaMarcus Russell. There’s plenty of discussion, though, over who will be the first.Head coach Lane Kiffin, 33, and his young 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
Raiders opened training camp just last Thursday. They’ve had plenty of time, however, to make three different centers all appear as potential starters for the ‘08 season. Who will actually be the first offensive player to touch the ball in Week 1 for the silver and black, though, is still a tossup. Two of the three nominees for the starting job -- 33-year-old John Wade and 25-year-old Chris Morris -- have spent the opening few days of training camp splitting the first-team duties at the position. Meanwhile, the final candidate, 28-year-old Jake Grove, has been spending time on the sidelines resting an injured knee.Despite not handling a single snap, though, the recovering Grove already assured the Mercury News, “I’m planning on starting.”The center spot immediately became a camp tossup when veteran lineman Jeremy Newberry signed with the San Diego Chargers on June 2 after starting 14 games with Oakland last season. Prior to Newberry’s arrival from San Francisco, Grove manned the center position for the Raiders, starting all of the team’s games two years ago and a half-season in 2005.Now, though, Grove is no sure lock to be the team’s starter this season.Oakland signed 11-year veteran John Wade in March to fill the veteran void Newberry left behind. Wade, who has equally divided his 10-year career with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has started 106 of his 126 career games since entering the NFL in 1998 and has never allowed more than 3? sacks in a single season. He has a résumé very similar to Newberry’s, which isn’t a good sign for the 300-pound Grove, who lost his job to the older veteran last season. There’s also the young wild-card -- one who has patiently and quietly spent two years on Oakland’s roster just waiting for an opportunity like this to arise.Former Michigan State standout and 2006 seventh-rounder Chris Morris has seen as much time with the first team as any Raider center during offseason workouts and minicamps this year. The third-year lineman has only seen action on special teams and in a handful of plays at left guard (once replacing an injured Robert Gallery) in his short career, but he was known as a very reliable center with the Spartans, surrendering only one sack over his final two college seasons. With Grove nursing a longtime knee injury that's nagged him and Wade still learning O-line coach Tom Cable’s blocking scheme, Morris has been given a great opportunity to finally move up on the team’s depth chart.“I hope [the center position] decides itself,” Kiffin said Saturday after two practice sessions. “I am not going to put a date on it and make the wrong decision. I can’t figure out that date that it’s going to be them showing it to us. Obviously, we are not going to know that until we get into the preseason.”Though, with past experience at center for Oakland (34 starts, to be exact), early hints from Kiffin point to Grove being the early favorite to take home the prize.“Jake right now isn't practicing two times a day, so that is a concern with us, but we have time to get him back into it. He looks great. He is stronger and quicker than he has been since we have been here,” Kiffin said. “The people that have been here a long time say the Jets 6 Sanchez Jersey
same thing, all the way back to when they picked him in the second round.”“We know he can play well in this system,” the second-year coach added. With plenty of time before his team’s Sept. 8 kickoff, Kiffin certainly will have no problem dealing with a three-horse race.Especially when it involves three 300-pound workhorse offensive linemen.Anthony Carroll can be contacted at Training Camp: An entirely new kind of fantasy game! Charles Woodson Antonio Gates

Before each defensive play, you might find yourself scanning the entire playing field in search of number 24. That is primarily because cornerback Charles Woodson has played virtually everywhere on the football field this season. The Raiders franchise tagged Woodson for the second year straight last 6 Sanchez Purple AFL50th jersey
offseason for $10.5 million - a move that had many people questioning the Oakland front office. However, through four games this season, Woodson is showing signs of the energy he possessed during his 1997 season at Michigan in which he earned the coveted Heisman Trophy. With the play of the Oakland secondary finally coming together, Woodson has been able to not only play on the corner, but also in the middle of the field and as a deep safety. Rookie cornerback Fabian Washington and third-year cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha have proven to be effective defenders at the corner position. This has allowed defensive coordinator Rob Ryan to shuffle Woodson to the center of the field and also to the safety position. In week two against Kansas City, fans saw Woodson shadowing all-pro tight end Tony Gonzalez. Gonzalez had just 44 yards on the game - keep in mind, this is following a season in which he caught 102 balls for 1,258 yards. In the next week against Philadelphia, Woodson had the grueling task of controlling Terrell Owens - a dangerous weapon who had 112 yards and 143 yards in the two games leading up to this matchup. Woodson was able to hold the second-leading NFL receiver in yardage to just 80 yards, along with an average of 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
just 8.9 yards per catch - a season low for Owens. In Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers, look for the to shift Woodson towards the middle of the field in anticipation of shutting down San Diego's leading receiver, tight end Antonio Gates. Already having faced Tony Gonzalez and wideout Terrell Owens, Woodson should have little difficulty holding Gates in check - After all, Woodson does get paid over $10 million more than Gates

Kerry Collins Randy Moss

Five teams are winless thus far in the NFL season: Oakland, Baltimore, Houston, Arizona, and Green Bay. However, looking beyond the win/loss and column and exclusively at overall performance, the are playing much better than an 0-3 ballclub. Week four's matchup at home against Dallas provides 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
Oakland with their most winnable game to date.Dallas (2-1) has edged out two relatively weak opponents thus far this season-San Diego (1-2) and San Francisco (1-2) by just a combined seven points. Last week's comeback victory across the Bay sparked Coach Bill Parcells to keep his team on the West Coast for the entire week. Already 2-0 on the road, Dallas has hopes that his decision to remain in the Bay Area will help them jump off to an early 3-0 road record.Sunday's game will provide plenty of action, as Dallas' fourth-ranked offense will collide with Oakland's eighth-ranked offense. At the helm are two fantasy team studs: Dallas quarterback Drew Bledsoe-ranked third in NFL passer rating with a 103.7 rating, and Oakland's Kerry Collins-fifth among all NFL quarterbacks with 95.9 rating. Additionally, each team brings a top five NFL wideout to the playing field in second-ranked Randy Moss and fourth-ranked Terry Glenn. Already, Moss and Glenn have amounted for 679 yards and three touchdowns.Who will get the best of this offensive collision? The answer is far from obscure: It is simply the team who forces the most turnovers. A shift in the control of the ball will not only swing field position, but also change the momentum of the entire game. Forcing the opponent's offense to turn the ball over is something the have struggled with for several years. However, if they can manage to win the turnover battle on Sunday expect Norv Turner's high-powered offense to control the tempo of the game. Winning the turnover battle is particularly imperative for Oakland, who holds the home field advantage in the matchup. Starting drives inside the opponent's 50-yard line will bring the home crowd into the game. Even if Oakland is forced to punt the ball away, All-Pro punter Shane Lechler will have the opportunity to pin the Dallas offense inside their own 20-yard line and closer to the dreaded Black Hole-a place where even Hannibal Lector would have trouble Dallas Cowboys jersey
fitting into.Look for the winner of this matchup on Sunday to be the one who comes out of Oakland with more takeaways then their opponent.Key Offensive Comparisons:Drew Bledsoe: 63/98 ?850 yards, 6 TD's, 2 INT's Kerry Collins: 63/116 ?873 yards, 6 TD's, 0 INT'sTerry Glenn: 14 receptions, 336 yards, 1 TDRandy Moss: 15 receptions, 343 yards, 2 TD'sJulius Jones: 74 attempts, 259 yards, 3 TD'sLaMont Jordan: 49 attempts, 148 yards, 1 TD
