New York Jets
When the New York Jets acquired Brett Favre from the Green Bay Packers, the entire AFC East was transformed. Former Jet starter Chad Pennington went to Miami, upgrading that team. More good news for the Jets—their D-unit has also been improved and the running attack looks strong. The O-line is a concern.
Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins were terrible last season, going 1-15. During the off-season, Bill Parcells was hired as vice president of football operations. Parcells acquired a new GM and a first-time head coach (both formerly with the Cowboys). Chad Pennington is the team's new starter, and he could be a difference-maker.
Buffalo Bills
Of all AFC East clubs, the Buffalo Bills got the most out of the 2008 NFL Draft. The team also contracted some fine free agents. The Bills' 2006 first round pick, DT John McCargo, is poised to post a breakout year.
Final Analysis
The AFC East is still the Patriots' division. But the Jets will contend and the Dolphins may be the best they've been since Dan Marino retired. The Bills are also improved.
Sunday, August 24, 2008 -- The New England Patriots have dominated the AFC East for years. Last season they won more games than the other three teams in their division combined. But the sands have shifted a bit and it looks like the Pats will have some competition from the New York Jets, who are entering their Brett Favre era.
